Police Pursue Arrest Warrants for Opposition Party Leaders
Authorities are seeking arrest warrants for several key figures within the main opposition party, citing alleged violations of the National Security Act. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s anti-espionage division has reportedly requested warrants for two prominent party members, including the party’s representative and its general secretary.
Allegations of Espionage and Pro-North Korean Activities
The individuals are suspected of forming an organization that collaborates with North Korea. Allegations include organizing rallies demanding the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the Korean Peninsula and characterizing joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States as ‘war drills,’ actions deemed supportive of North Korea’s stance.
National Security Act, Article 7, stipulates that individuals who praise, encourage, or propagate the activities of anti-state organizations or their members, or who incite national division, shall be subject to imprisonment for up to seven years.
Ongoing Investigation into National Security Law Violations
The police have been investigating the opposition party for alleged violations of the National Security Act since 2024. In August of that year, a search and seizure operation was conducted at the party’s headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul. In July of the previous year, one of the representatives was summoned for questioning as a suspect.
Interrogations for the representative and general secretary, now suspects in the case, are scheduled for June 16th at 10 AM and 3 PM, respectively.
