Historic Peace Accord on the Horizon for US and Iran
A long-standing geopolitical tension between the United States and Iran appears to be nearing a critical resolution. Pakistan’s government, which has facilitated dialogue between the two nations, has expressed strong confidence that a landmark agreement could be finalized within the next 24 hours.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shares Optimism
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan shared his optimism on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We are closer to a peace accord than ever before.” He further indicated that preparations are underway for a substantive meeting next week.
“We are preparing to hold substantive meetings next week,” Sharif announced. He extended his gratitude for the “persistent efforts” demonstrated by both the United States and Iran during the negotiation process, and also conveyed sincere appreciation for the support from “brotherly nations.”
The Prime Minister concluded his statement by expressing his conviction that this historic peace accord will serve as a “solid foundation for lasting peace.”
Alignment with US Administration’s Statements
These developments align with recent communications from the U.S. administration. Just a day prior, former U.S. President Donald Trump explicitly suggested that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to conclude the state of hostilities with Iran could be finalized as early as this weekend or by Monday of the following week.
Next Steps in the Peace Process
Should both nations formally sign a cessation of hostilities agreement, it will usher in a new phase of detailed follow-up negotiations. Within 60 days of the signing, the parties are expected to enter into comprehensive discussions to finalize specific technical details.
This subsequent stage is anticipated to involve the establishment of a concrete roadmap for Iran’s nuclear facilities. Reports indicate that this roadmap will outline the precise methods for dismantling Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and managing nuclear materials.
