Serious Injury Reported at SPC Shany Facility
A worker has sustained severe injuries after becoming trapped in machinery at the Shany factory, a subsidiary of the SPC Group. This incident occurs just one month after a separate finger amputation accident at another group facility, raising concerns about workplace safety.
Incident Details Emerge
The accident took place around 9:38 AM on the 10th at the Shany Daegu plant in Nongong-eup, Dalseong-gun. A Vietnamese national in her 40s, identified as Ms. A, was working with a dough-sorting machine when her right arm became caught. She suffered deep lacerations to her right arm and was immediately transported to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities, including the police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor, have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether any violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act occurred.
Pattern of Workplace Accidents
This latest incident follows a similar accident on the 10th of the previous month at the Samlip plant in Siheung. In that event, two employees in their 20s and 30s suffered finger amputations.
Following the Samlip incident, President Lee Jae-myung ordered a thorough investigation. The police subsequently formed a special investigation team to examine the circumstances.
Union Demands Accountability
In a statement released today, the National Chemical Food Union (Hwasung Food Union) strongly condemned what it termed the “predatory practices” of the SPC Group. The union highlighted that despite a promise to implement follow-up measures for accident prevention, including a special lecture, following the finger amputation accident at the Samlip plant and subsequent requests from the Hwasung Food Union SPC Samlip branch, a serious industrial accident has now occurred at Shany, another SPC Group affiliate.
The union urged the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the police to conduct a rigorous investigation and impose strict penalties on the management responsible for these recurring major accidents.
