Park Mi-kyung Named Chair of Presidential Committee on Sacrifice
President Lee Jae-myung has appointed Park Mi-kyung, a prominent civic activist from Gwangju, as the new Chairperson of the Presidential Committee on Sacrifice. The appointment, effective October 26th, places a seasoned advocate for civil society and democratic development at the helm of the committee. Park, 63, currently serves as the Executive Director and Co-Representative of the Gwangju Environmental Movement Federation.
A Legacy of Advocacy
Kang Hyo-jung, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, detailed Park’s extensive background, stating, “For three decades, Ms. Park has dedicated herself to civil society and the advancement of democracy, holding leadership roles in organizations such as the National Council of Civic Organizations and the National Council of Environmental Movement.” Kang further explained the rationale behind the appointment, noting, “She has been recognized as a fitting leader to commemorate the sacrifices of citizens who defended the constitution and democracy against authoritarianism, and to promote the prestige of K-Democracy both domestically and internationally.”
Purpose of the Committee
The Presidential Committee on Sacrifice was established in March of this year. Its primary objective is to honor the courageous spirit of citizens who stood against the military during the December 12th emergency martial law, a period marked by armed forces confronting unarmed civilians. The committee aims to remember and celebrate these acts of national resilience.
Expectations for the Future
First Senior Secretary Kang expressed high expectations for Park’s leadership. “We anticipate that Chairperson Park, with her deep understanding and strong communication skills regarding civic democracy, will further elevate the completion of K-Democracy, which has been safeguarded by the citizenry, and will provide strong support for the people’s government,” Kang stated.
Background and Qualifications
A native of Gwangju, Chairperson Park is an alumna of Gyeongsin Girls’ High School and graduated with a degree in Korean Language and Literature from JoongAng University. She further pursued her academic interests, obtaining a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies and undertaking doctoral coursework in Public Administration, both from JoongAng University. Beyond her current roles, Park has a rich history of civic engagement. Her previous positions include Co-Representative of the Environmental Movement Federation, Co-Representative of the National Council of Civic Organizations, and a member of the Civil Society Committee under the National Police Agency. She has also served as a director for the non-profit organization “Pure Road,” demonstrating a long-standing commitment to both environmental and civil rights activism.
