Itaewon Tragedy Victim Confirmed: Rescue Volunteer Among 160 Dead
A local business owner, who actively participated in rescue efforts during the Itaewon crowd crush on October 29th, has been officially recognized as a victim of the tragedy. This posthumous acknowledgment brings the total number of fatalities to 160.
The Ministry of Interior and Safety confirmed the decision on the 26th, stating that the individual, identified as the late Mr. Baek, met the criteria for victim recognition under the relevant legislation. Mr. Baek operated a business in the vicinity of the Hamilton Hotel in Itaewon and was among the first responders, assisting in the evacuation of those injured at the scene.
Official Confirmation of Victim Status
The Ministry explained that following a comprehensive review by experts and relevant agencies, it was determined that Mr. Baek experienced psychological and emotional trauma directly linked to the Itaewon tragedy. This determination led to his final recognition as a victim.
With this official designation, Mr. Baek’s bereaved family will now be eligible to receive support and benefits as stipulated by disaster safety and victim recognition laws. A spokesperson for the Ministry assured that measures are in place to ensure that support for victims and their families is provided without interruption, while always respecting their dignity and privacy.
