Xbox Console Prices Set to Increase Significantly
Microsoft has announced substantial price adjustments for its Xbox consoles, with new pricing set to take effect on August 1, 2026. The 512 GB model will see a price increase of $100, while the 1 TB model will rise by $150. Additionally, the 2 TB model is slated for discontinuation.
This latest price adjustment follows a previous increase in October in the U.S., which saw prices go up by between $20 and $70. Microsoft attributes these changes to a surge in component and memory costs, which have more than doubled. The company anticipates these costs could double again by the fall of 2027.
Understanding Console Pricing Dynamics
Microsoft explained that, unlike typical consumer electronics such as mobile phones and computers, gaming consoles have historically been sold at prices below their production costs. This strategy has now become unsustainable due to rising manufacturing expenses.
Financial Flexibility for Consumers
To help mitigate the impact of these price increases on consumers, Microsoft is introducing enhanced financing options. Customers purchasing Xbox hardware directly through Microsoft Stores will have access to ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ options, allowing them to spread the cost over time with short-term interest-free installments.
Furthermore, consumers buying eligible Xbox hardware through Amazon can take advantage of 0% APR financing for up to 12 months. These initiatives aim to provide greater financial flexibility for gamers looking to acquire new console hardware.
Trade-in Programs and Refurbished Options
Microsoft is also actively collaborating with retail partners to promote programs that offer previously used consoles at more accessible prices. Through these programs, customers can trade in their existing consoles to participating retailers in exchange for cash or store credit. These returned units are then expected to be resold at discounted rates.
Xbox Certified Refurbished Consoles
Consumers can also find Xbox Certified Refurbished Consoles at Microsoft Stores, available with discounts of up to $100 compared to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. These refurbished units offer a more budget-friendly entry point into the Xbox ecosystem.
Xbox Series S Remains a Key Option
Microsoft highlighted the Xbox Series S as a particularly cost-effective option for players seeking access to a wide range of titles. The company noted that the Series S provides a gateway to popular games, including upcoming releases and established favorites, making it a compelling choice for budget-conscious gamers.
