Andre Onana Poised for Manchester United Pre-Season Camp
Andre Onana, a key figure in Manchester United’s goalkeeping department, is reportedly set to rejoin the club for their upcoming pre-season training camp. European football insider Fabrizio Romano announced on his social media channels that the Cameroonian goalkeeper is expected to return to Manchester for pre-season preparations.
Conflicting Club Interests Regarding Onana’s Future
The current plan is for Onana to participate in the pre-season under the guidance of manager Erik ten Hag. However, Turkish club Besiktas, where Onana has been on loan, is still keen on extending his stay. Reports indicate that Besiktas wishes to negotiate a new loan deal with Manchester United, aiming to keep the goalkeeper for another season.
Onana, who was deemed surplus to requirements at Manchester United last summer, has had a successful loan spell with Besiktas during the 2023-2024 season. He played a crucial role in helping the Turkish side secure the Turkish Cup, establishing himself as their starting goalkeeper.
Manchester United’s Stance on a Permanent Sale
While Besiktas hopes to retain Onana’s services on loan, Manchester United is reportedly looking to sell the player permanently. This approach is driven by the club’s need to generate funds for new player acquisitions during the summer transfer window.
Manchester United initially paid Inter Milan £46 million for Onana in July 2023 and is understood to be seeking to recoup at least a portion of that investment through a sale.
Onana’s Manchester United Tenure and Loan Performance
Onana’s time at Manchester United has been met with mixed reactions. Despite his reputation as a world-class goalkeeper, he has struggled with concentration, leading to costly errors that earned him the nickname ‘gifted hands’ among some observers. He made 102 appearances for the club but ultimately lost his starting position and was sent out on loan.
During Onana’s absence, Manchester United secured a third-place finish in the Premier League for the 2024-2025 season, earning them a spot in the following season’s Champions League. It is anticipated that Onana’s contract situation will be addressed for the new season, irrespective of his loan status.
Emergence of Altay Bayındır as United’s Go-To Keeper
The current first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester United is Altay Bayındır, a 2002-born player from Belgium. Bayındır joined the club from Fenerbahçe in September and quickly cemented his place as the team’s primary goalkeeper in his debut season. His impressive performances led to him being named the Premier League’s Young Player of the Year.
