Park Min-ji Enters KLPGA Legend Books with Historic 20th Victory
Golfer Park Min-ji has etched her name into the history books of the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) by securing her 20th career win, a remarkable achievement that places her among the sport’s elite. The 28-year-old, representing NH Investment & Securities, clinched the title at the Sh Suhyup Bank MBN Women’s Open on Sunday, a victory that fulfilled a long-held ambition.
Reflecting on her career milestone, Park shared, “When I achieved my first win in 2017 at the Samchully Together Open, I vowed to retire after 20 victories. I never imagined I would reach this goal so quickly.” Her face, a mix of joy and deep emotion, conveyed the significance of the moment as she spoke after the tournament.
Dramatic Final Round Seals Landmark Win
Park’s path to her 20th win was nothing short of dramatic. She entered the final round trailing by five strokes, tied for 10th place. However, a stunning performance saw her shoot an impressive 8-under-par 64 in the final round, with a remarkable eight birdies. This propelled her to a total score of 10-under-par 206, narrowly defeating runner-up Kim Ji-hyun by a single stroke.
The victory marks her first win of the 2024 season and her first since the Celltrion Queens Masters in 2024, where she secured her 19th win. This latest triumph ties her with the late Koo Ok-hee and Shin Ji-ae for the most wins in KLPGA history.
Unflappable Composure Under Pressure
Despite the high stakes and the pressure of a potential record-breaking performance, Park displayed an unusual level of calm. “Strangely, I didn’t feel nervous at all. I kept wondering why I wasn’t nervous,” she admitted in a post-round interview. She revealed that her caddie intentionally withheld information about her standing on the course until the 16th hole. “I thought, ‘Ah, this is a signal to just focus on my game,’ and I didn’t look at the scoreboard at all until I reached the 18th green.”
Even when she finished her round first and was practicing putts while awaiting the results of her competitors, Park maintained a composed outlook. “The 16th and 18th holes are relatively easier, so I naturally expected a playoff. I prepared myself mentally, thinking, ‘This is also part of the journey towards victory.'”
Looking Ahead: A Commitment to Leadership
While achieving her childhood dream of 20 wins and retirement, Park’s vision has already shifted towards the future. “I’ve always regretted not being able to play the aggressive golf I wanted. Now that I’ve secured my tour card firmly, I will show my strong and aggressive style of play again,” she declared, embracing a new resolve.
Beyond her personal achievements, Park emphasized the responsibility that comes with her status. “There are many juniors who will walk an even greater path than me. I believe I need to run diligently at the forefront so that those players can forge a more magnificent path. I want to be a role model,” she stated. Her commitment is to be a player whose actions and words are exemplary, leaving a positive legacy for future generations.
Expressing deep gratitude to her fans, Park conveyed a heartfelt message. “So many people support me, whether I’m resting or on the golf course. Sometimes I wonder if I deserve such great love. At times like these, I am determined to become a truly exemplary person in this position, in this place where I stand. I will be mindful of every action and word, and strive to show my best,” she promised, her voice filled with sincerity.
Park Min-ji’s historic 20th win marks a new chapter in KLPGA history. Her focus now turns to inspiring the next generation, solidifying her place not just as a champion, but as a true leader and role model in the sport.
