Hwang In-beom Makes Triumphant Return in Friendly Match
Midfielder Hwang In-beom has made a successful comeback to the field, showcasing impressive form in South Korea’s friendly match against Trinidad and Tobago in Provo, Utah. The 26-year-old, who had been sidelined with a foot injury sustained in March, played a crucial role in the team’s 2-0 victory, earning high praise from Head Coach Hong Myung-bo.
Hwang entered the match in the second half, replacing Lee Han-beom in the 62nd minute. Despite only playing approximately 30 minutes, including stoppage time, his performance belied his recent injury layoff. He demonstrated exceptional vision and execution, most notably a perfectly placed pass from the half-line to Lee Dong-gyeong in the 70th minute. This assist directly led to Cho Gue-sung’s header for the team’s third goal, solidifying their lead.
Player Reflects on Return and Performance
Speaking after the game, Hwang expressed gratitude for being back on the pitch. “The fact that I can play in a match again is something I am thankful for,” he stated. “I’m also fortunate to have secured a win today. I aim to improve on my individual and team shortcomings to perform well in the remaining matches.”
When asked about the ‘dream pass’ that has become a talking point among fans, Hwang attributed it to adapting to the game’s situation. “I just try to do what’s best in each moment, and fortunately, it worked out well,” he commented.
The midfielder also lightheartedly addressed a moment where a shot sailed over the crossbar and toward the stands. “I tried a ‘ball test’ today,” Hwang joked, referring to the ball’s feel. “But I think the issue was with me, not the ball. The ball’s characteristics and playing after a long time are all very important for a player.”
High-Altitude Training Camp
The match was held at an altitude of 1,387 meters. This training camp in Salt Lake City, at an altitude of 1,460 meters, is part of the team’s preparation for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against China and Mexico. The squad began their acclimatization on May 18th, with Hwang In-beom joining on May 25th.
Hwang acknowledged the challenges of playing at a higher altitude. “I’m not sure if it’s difficult because of the altitude, or if it’s because I’m playing after a long time,” he admitted with a laugh. He emphasized the importance of match play in regaining match fitness. “The 30 minutes I was given today were truly valuable. Getting my rhythm back like this will be a great help in preparing for the next match.”
Coach Hong Myung-bo indicated that Hwang’s playing time is expected to increase in the next friendly match against El Salvador on June 4th. Hwang expressed his desire for more minutes, stating, “If given the opportunity, a player’s heart always wants to play more.”
Partnership in Midfield and Injury Concerns
In the midfield, Hwang partnered with veteran Lee Jae-sung. Hwang noted their strong understanding on the field, despite it being their first time playing together as central midfielders. “Jae-sung hyung is a player who is excellent at supporting those around him, making them comfortable,” Hwang explained. “I also received a lot of help from him on the field today. We understand each other’s movements without needing to speak.”
Another concern arose when teammate Jo Yu-min, a fellow 1996-born player, sustained an ankle injury and had to be substituted. Hwang, who is close to Jo, was visibly worried. “I was very concerned because Yu-min and I are close friends,” Hwang shared. “Even if it were another player, I would be worried if they were injured on the field. I can only imagine the personal disappointment of being injured right before the World Cup.” He concluded by expressing a collective hope for positive medical results for Jo.
