Lee Jung-hoo Makes MLB History with Unprecedented Five-Hit Performance
San Francisco Giants outfielder Lee Jung-hoo has etched his name in the Major League Baseball record books, achieving a landmark feat by collecting five hits in a single game. This historic performance marks a significant moment for Korean players in the league.
Record-Breaking Day in Denver
On July 1st, Korean time, Lee Jung-hoo was in the starting lineup as the fifth batter for the Giants’ road game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. He concluded the game with an impressive stat line of six at-bats, five hits, two RBIs, and one run scored. This marks Lee’s first time recording five hits in a single MLB game since his debut in 2024.
The achievement is even more remarkable when considering his entire professional career, including his time in the KBO League. Prior to this game, his personal best for hits in a single game was four, last achieved on August 2018 against the LG Twins. Notably, this is the first time any Korean player in Major League Baseball has managed to record five hits in one game, surpassing the records set by previous notable Korean MLB players such as Choo Shin-soo, Kang Jung-ho, and Kim Ha-seong.
Resilience and Dominance at the Plate
Lee Jung-hoo, who had recently been sidelined due to a hamstring injury, showed a complete return to form during the three-game series against the Rockies. Over these three games, he amassed 11 hits in 15 at-bats, significantly boosting his season batting average to 0.304.
His impactful presence was felt from his very first at-bat. In the first inning, with two outs and runners on first and second, he delivered a clutch RBI single against Rockies starter Ryan Gold, giving the Giants an early lead. This crucial run ultimately proved to be the game-winning RBI.
After flying out to left field in the third inning, Lee consistently produced hits in his subsequent plate appearances. In the fifth inning, he led off with a double to deep center field, scoring a run. Later in the same inning, he crossed home plate after a teammate’s hit.
The Giants capitalized on their offensive surge in the fifth inning, scoring a total of seven runs to decisively take control of the game. During this explosive inning for San Francisco, Lee recorded his second hit, and teammate Willli Adames also contributed with a grand slam.
Lee’s hitting streak continued into the latter stages of the game. He added another RBI with a crucial single in the seventh inning. In the eighth inning, despite the Rockies bringing in relief pitcher Brett Sullivan, Lee continued his offensive onslaught, securing his fifth hit of the game and completing his historic performance.
Giants Secure Dominant Victory
The San Francisco Giants collectively amassed an impressive 25 hits in the game, ultimately routing the Colorado Rockies with a final score of 19-6. Both the starting pitcher, who recorded hits, runs, and RBIs, and rookie pitcher Jordan Cocks, who made his MLB debut in this game, logged their first hits and runs respectively.
The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the Giants, bringing their season record to 23 wins and 36 losses. They maintain their fourth-place standing in the National League West division. The Colorado Rockies, with a record of 22 wins and 38 losses, remain at the bottom of the division standings.
