The Samsung Lions have continued their winning streak against the NC Dinos, securing a thrilling come-from-behind victory in a game that mirrored the drama of the ‘promised 8th inning.’ The Lions managed to overturn a significant deficit through exceptional hitting and timely plays.
Lions Mount Late-Game Rally
In the opening game of their series at Daegu Lions Park on the 2nd, the Samsung Lions found themselves in a challenging situation after their starting pitcher, Ariel Jurado, struggled. Despite the early setback, the team rallied with impressive hitting, ultimately securing an 8-7 win against the NC Dinos. This victory extends the Lions’ season series lead over NC to seven games.
The decisive moment came in the bottom of the 8th inning, with the Lions trailing 4-7. As the home crowd erupted in anticipation, the ‘promised 8th inning’ unfolded. Following a double by Sohn Bong-ki and an infield single by Jeon Byeong-woo, Park Sung-gyu came to the plate with one out and runners on first and third. Park then connected with an 129km/h slider from NC pitcher Im Ji-min, driving it over the left-field wall for a game-tying three-run home run. The roar of the crowd at Lions Park was deafening.
The drama was not over. After the tying homer, with two outs and pinch-runner Yang Hyun in scoring position, Kim Sung-yoon delivered a clutch hit to center field, completing the dramatic 8-7 comeback. This marked a significant turning point in the game.
NC Dominates Early, Lions Claw Back
The early and middle innings belonged to the NC Dinos. Determined to break their losing streak against Samsung, the Dinos’ offense put pressure on the Lions’ starting pitcher, Ariel Jurado. Jurado struggled significantly, giving up a season-high seven earned runs (five unearned) on nine hits over just 5.1 innings. This marked his highest number of earned runs in a single game this season across 12 appearances.
NC took an early lead in the top of the 1st inning with a solo home run from leadoff hitter Kim Joo-won. Samsung responded in the bottom of the 1st with a solo homer from Kim Sung-yoon to tie the game at 1-1.
The Dinos regained the lead in the 3rd inning. After a walk to Kim Hyeong-jun and a single by Oh Jang-han, Kim Joo-won singled to load the bases. Lee Woo-seong then hit a ground ball that allowed the runner from third to score, breaking the tie. NC extended their lead with two more runs in the 3rd, making it 4-1.
In the 5th inning, NC added another run on an RBI double, pushing their lead to 5-1. Samsung managed to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the 5th with a solo home run from Sohn Jae-hyun followed by an RBI double from Diaz, bringing the score to 5-3.
However, NC struck again in the 6th inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues and walks to score two more runs, extending their lead to 7-3. Samsung then mounted their comeback in the bottom of the 6th, scoring three runs to narrow the gap.
Bullpen Shuts Down NC, Secures Victory
The Lions’ bullpen ultimately secured the win. Jang Chan-hee pitched two scoreless innings after entering in the 7th, earning his fourth win of the season. Kim Jae-yoon closed out the game in the 9th inning, preserving the one-run lead and earning his 13th save.
Kim Sung-yoon, the hero of the comeback, had a stellar performance, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Jeon Byeong-woo also contributed significantly, going 2-for-4 to lead the bottom of the lineup.
NC Dinos had a final chance in the 9th with two outs, but failed to capitalize, ending the game with a disappointing loss.
