Daegu Mayoral Election: Exit Polls Show Tight Race, Divergent Candidate Reactions
The mayoral election in Daegu, a key battleground for the June 3rd local elections, has been characterized by a nail-biting finish, with exit polls revealing a race too close to call. The conflicting results from various exit polls have created a stir in the campaign headquarters of both leading candidates, Kim Bu-gyeom and Chu Kyung-ho, prompting starkly different interpretations.
Conflicting Exit Poll Data
Exit poll results announced by three major broadcasters presented a different outcome than projections from JTBC. The broadcasters’ poll indicated that Chu Kyung-ho narrowly defeated Kim Bu-gyeom by a margin of 0.8 percentage points. In contrast, JTBC’s projection showed Kim Bu-gyeom emerging victorious with 49.7% of the vote, compared to Chu Kyung-ho’s 49.2%, a difference of 0.7 percentage points. Both sets of results fall within the margin of error, signaling an extremely close contest.
Kim Bu-gyeom’s Optimism Amidst Uncertainty
In an interview following the poll releases, Kim Bu-gyeom addressed the diverging exit poll data. When asked about his interpretation, he stated, “Although the results from the broadcasters and JTBC differ, the fact that it is such an incredibly close race suggests that the desire for change among Daegu citizens is strong.” He expressed optimism regarding the final election results, adding, “I am optimistic about the outcome.”
When questioned about the factors that will determine the ultimate victor, Kim Bu-gyeom commented, “While I don’t know if Daegu citizens fully expressed their sentiments in the exit polls, this result, achieved amidst a strong political climate, gives me confidence that a good outcome is possible.” He further reflected on his candidacy, noting, “This is my fourth attempt in Daegu. I believe citizens are now accepting my sincerity, and I hope to firmly establish a momentum for change and reform.” He conveyed a sense of gratitude, saying, “I feel rewarded that my life’s efforts have been recognized, and that my plea to the citizens of Daegu has been met with such strong support.”
Prior to the exit poll announcements, Kim Bu-gyeom was observed maintaining a cautious demeanor. However, upon the release of the close-race data, he was seen nodding and clapping with a smile, seemingly unfazed by the uncertainty.
Chu Kyung-ho’s Interpretation of a Heated Race
In contrast, Chu Kyung-ho’s campaign headquarters maintained a somber atmosphere while watching the initial projections showing the ruling party’s advantage. Upon learning that the exit poll favored Chu Kyung-ho by 0.8 percentage points, approximately half of the campaign staff erupted in cheers. Chu Kyung-ho himself was seen with his lips firmly pressed together, gazing forward intently. Lee Jin-suk, another candidate, shared a similar reaction.
In a post-exit poll interview, Chu Kyung-ho stated, “As we initially anticipated, the results are a close race, with a narrow margin.” He added, “As the vote count is still ongoing, I believe this is not the time to make many statements.”
Regarding Kim Bu-gyeom’s assertion that he had “broken through the conservative wall,” Chu Kyung-ho offered his perspective: “I believe it signifies that the support for candidate Kim, who was leading significantly, has hit a wall, and I have made substantial progress.” He characterized the situation as a “heated race.”
When asked about the reason for the narrow 1% point difference, Chu Kyung-ho attributed it to “disappointment due to internal party divisions, conflicts, and an unrefined selection process.” However, he concluded on a hopeful note, “Recently, there has been a lot of consolidation, and I believe the outcome, which I am working towards, is a result of that and the expectation of other possibilities.”
