Seoul Denies ‘Hardline Leftist’ Accusations, Affirms Strong US Ties
Official sources in South Korea have strongly refuted claims that the current administration is adopting a hardline leftist stance, which could potentially weaken the alliance with the United States. These assertions stem from an opinion piece published online by The Wall Street Journal, authored by conservative figures in the U.S.
Concerns Raised Over Alliance Strength
The opinion piece, titled ‘Korea’s Pivot to a Hardline Leftist Stance Toward America,’ was published on January 1st (local time) by Nicholas Eberstadt, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and Lawrence Sellin, a member of the Save America Foundation.
The authors argued that the South Korea-U.S. alliance faces dual challenges: not only from the unpredictable nature of Donald Trump’s administration but also from what they described as the ‘recklessness’ of South Korea’s ‘hardline leftist government.’ They suggested that these factors are directly impacting the alliance.
Seoul’s Official Response
In response, South Korea’s presidential office submitted a rebuttal to The Wall Street Journal, under the title ‘The Republic of Korea is Still a ‘Model Ally’.’ Choi Sung-ah, the presidential secretary for overseas public relations, stated on February 5th (local time) via the presidential office’s press release system that the opinion piece fundamentally misinterprets the Republic of Korea, its democratically elected government, and the solidity of the South Korea-U.S. alliance.
Choi elaborated, stating, ‘Political differences are being confused with systemic change, and routine diplomacy is being confused with fundamental changes in the alliance relationship.’ She emphasized that such claims fail to reflect the current reality in South Korea and pose a risk of eroding trust with one of America’s closest allies.
Emphasis on Alliance Strengthening
Choi asserted that the opposite is true, explaining that since taking office, the administration has been working closely with the United States to strengthen and modernize the alliance. Cooperation has been expanded across various sectors, including national security, economic recovery, and advanced technology and strategic industries.
South Korea’s investments in the U.S. are contributing to the revitalization of American industries. The nation is also enhancing its technological competitiveness and taking on greater responsibilities for collective defense. According to Choi, South Korea has emerged as a ‘model ally,’ as has been noted by high-ranking U.S. government officials.
Unwavering Commitment to Alliance
The presidential secretary concluded by affirming that the South Korea-U.S. alliance remains strong and is essential for both nations. The Republic of Korea possesses an unwavering commitment to maintaining order, the alliance with the U.S., and the values and understanding that have underpinned this relationship for decades. Choi stressed that there should be no doubts regarding this commitment.
