Mason Greenwood Linked with Turkish Giants Amidst Club Uncertainty
Mason Greenwood, a prominent figure once considered a key talent for Manchester United, is reportedly nearing a move to Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahçe. This potential transfer is unfolding against the backdrop of a critical presidential election at the club.
Presidential Candidate Claims Agreement with Greenwood
Hakan Saffi, one of the leading candidates for the Fenerbahçe presidency, has publicly stated that an agreement has been reached with Greenwood for a transfer. Saffi announced that a four-year contract has been agreed upon with the player and that preparations are complete to cover any transfer fees owed to Greenwood’s current club, Marseille.
Greenwood has acknowledged Saffi’s announcement by ‘liking’ a post on the candidate’s personal social media and following his account. However, the validity of this agreement hinges entirely on Saffi’s success in the upcoming presidential election.
Fabrizio Romano, a well-regarded European football transfer expert, shared these details via his social media platform on the 6th. Saffi is a significant figure in Turkish business, also serving as the chairman of Saffi Holdings. He is considered a strong contender in the Fenerbahçe presidential race and has previously served on the club’s board of directors.
Saffi has signaled his intention to make substantial investments should he be elected president. This mirrors a previous challenge made by Saffi against Aziz Yıldırım for the presidency. The election results are anticipated on the 8th, amidst considerable fan frustration over years of perceived mismanagement. A strong sentiment for reform is reportedly growing within the club’s fanbase.
Greenwood’s Career Trajectory
Born in 2001, Greenwood was a highly touted prospect from Manchester United’s youth academy. His career was derailed by serious allegations. In January 2022, Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and assault against his then-girlfriend. Following the incident, Manchester United suspended him indefinitely from all club activities and training, and halted sales of merchandise featuring the player.
However, the prosecution’s case was dropped in 2023 due to a change in the key witnesses’ statements. Following an internal investigation, Manchester United decided not to reintegrate Greenwood into the first team. After more than a year of being sidelined, the club loaned Greenwood to Spanish side Getafe in September 2023, deeming his return to competitive play at Old Trafford unlikely.
At Getafe, Greenwood demonstrated flashes of his former ability, remaining match-fit. In the summer of 2024, he made a permanent move to French club Marseille for a reported fee of €26 million. His first season in Ligue 1 was impactful, recording 21 goals and 5 assists. In the 2025-2026 season, Greenwood contributed 16 goals and 7 assists across 32 league appearances for Marseille, leading the team in attacking output.
Greenwood’s contract with Marseille is set to run until June 2029. Should he transfer to Fenerbahçe, a potential goal-scoring duel could emerge next season with Oh Hyun-gyu, the South Korean national team striker for Beşiktaş, and the Turkish league’s top scorer. Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe are fierce rivals in Istanbul.
