Global Leaders Recognized for Contributions to Peace and Development
Four prominent candidates for the position of United Nations Secretary-General have been awarded honorary citizenship of Jeju Province. The recognition was bestowed upon them for their participation in the 21st Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity, an event that brings together global leaders to discuss pressing international issues.
Distinguished Recipients and Forum Discussions
The honorary Jeju citizenships were presented to:
- Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
- Rebecca Greenspan, Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
- Maria Fernanda Espinosa, President of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly
- Macky Sall, former President of Senegal
These leaders are participating in key sessions of the Jeju Forum, including a special dialogue with UN Secretary-General candidates. The forum’s central theme this year is ‘Reimagining Multilateralism,’ focusing on global cooperation and a sustainable future.
Jeju’s Vision for Global Engagement
Jeju Province stated that the honorary citizenship was awarded to recognize the significant global influence of these leaders and to strengthen cooperation. By bestowing this honor, the province aims to enhance Jeju’s international standing and foster broader exchanges with global thought leaders. This initiative is expected to bolster Jeju’s role in promoting peace, sustainable development, and international collaboration.
The Jeju Forum: A Platform for Global Dialogue
The 21st Jeju Forum is taking place from June 24th to June 26th at the Jeju Haevichi Hotel and the Jeju Folklore and Natural History Museum. Under the overarching theme of ‘The Era of Division, Reimagining Cooperation,’ the forum features 68 sessions addressing a wide range of topics, including geopolitical tensions, conflicts, energy crises, economic development, culture, and education.
The event has convened approximately 600 participants from over 60 countries, including former and current government officials, academics, business leaders, civil society experts, and opinion leaders, all engaged in robust discussions on critical global challenges.
