Leading Neurosurgeon Appointed Head of National Neurosurgical Society
Dr. Kim Jong-hyun, a distinguished neurosurgeon at Korea University Guro Hospital, has been appointed as the president of the Korean Society of Neurosurgical Science. His term is set to run for one year, concluding in May 2027.
The Korean Society of Neurosurgical Science is an academic organization dedicated to the advancement of clinical and basic research in the field of neurosurgery, particularly concerning brain and spinal cord tumors. The society actively engages professionals from various medical disciplines, with a primary focus on neurosurgery, to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients suffering from neurosurgical conditions.
Vision for Enhanced Global Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Ties
In his inaugural address, Dr. Kim emphasized the critical role of neurosurgical science in addressing the growing number of tumor patients. He stated, “Neurosurgery is a complex and vital medical field that not only plays a pivotal role in the frontline treatment of patients with rapidly increasing tumors by understanding brain and spinal cord tumors but also encompasses long-term functional recovery, quality of life, and social reintegration for patients.”
Dr. Kim outlined his strategic priorities for his presidency, highlighting a commitment to expanding and strengthening international collaborations. “We will expand and strengthen exchanges with affiliated overseas societies to share and develop the clinical experience and extensive knowledge within our society,” he explained. “Furthermore, we will enhance the system of multidisciplinary cooperation with experts from related fields such as cerebrovascular surgery, interventional neuroradiology, and emergency medicine.”
Distinguished Career and Contributions
Dr. Kim is widely recognized as a leading expert in neurosurgery, with over 25 years of experience in treating cerebrovascular diseases and Parkinson’s disease. His significant contributions extend to co-authoring a global neurosurgery textbook and participating in the development of treatment guidelines for surgical interventions, including for brain tumor metastasis.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Kim has held prominent leadership positions, including president of the Korean Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and president of the Korean Society of Gamma Knife Radiosurgery.
