Shin Jang-sik has officially announced his intention to run for the leadership of the Jo Guk Party, vowing to become the “left wing” or “left wing” of Korean politics. The announcement was made on July 5th, setting the stage for the party’s leadership election scheduled for July 25th.
Commitment to Left-Wing Politics
During a press conference held at the National Assembly, Shin Jang-sik declared his ambition to broaden the political landscape in Korea by strengthening the left-wing movement. He emphasized the need for a political force that champions principles while also being pragmatic.
Shin stated, “The current government, led by Lee Jae-myung, is clearly distinguishing between pragmatism and principles, and is moving towards growth. It must succeed.” However, he added, “For the Lee Jae-myung administration to succeed, both pragmatism and principles must stand together. The Jo Guk Party’s purpose is to firmly establish the pillar of principles.”
Rebuilding the Party’s Foundation
Shin outlined his vision for revitalizing the Jo Guk Party, focusing on strengthening its organizational structure and ideological identity. Key initiatives include:
- Reorganizing party organizations at the city and district levels.
- Establishing three core committees: a Party Strengthening Special Committee, a Party Constitution Revision Committee, and a Vision Lab.
- Redefining the party’s identity and presenting a clear vision tailored to the needs of the people.
- Developing concrete party platforms and preparing a long-term strategy for the 2028 general elections.
He further elaborated on his commitment to addressing societal challenges, stating, “We will break the vicious cycle where AI transformation and hyper-growth exacerbate socio-economic crises. We will strive to create a society that leads to a dignified life for the people, based on justice and sustainability.”
Drawing Inspiration from Past Leaders
Shin Jang-sik also invoked the legacies of former political figures, mentioning Lee Hae-chan, former Prime Minister, and Noh Hoe-chan, a former lawmaker. “I will carry forward the wisdom and courage of these two elders,” he pledged.
Shin has been leading the Jo Guk Party as its senior supreme council member since the resignation of former leader Jo Guk following the party’s defeat in the June 3rd local elections. His candidacy marks a significant step in the party’s efforts to redefine its role and influence in the national political arena.
Broader Political Context
Shin’s declaration comes at a time of dynamic political shifts in South Korea. His emphasis on principles aligns with a segment of the electorate seeking a stronger ideological stance from political parties. The Jo Guk Party, often positioned on the progressive side of the spectrum, aims to solidify its base and potentially expand its influence with Shin at the helm.
The upcoming leadership election will be a crucial juncture for the party, determining its direction and strategy in the lead-up to future national elections. Shin’s commitment to being the “left wing” suggests a focus on progressive policies and a distinct ideological identity within the broader political landscape.
