Park Jun-hyun, a highly touted rookie pitcher who signed a lucrative contract, faced significant challenges with control during his team’s recent game against the Doosan Bears. Despite entering the game with a substantial signing bonus, Park struggled with a high number of walks, leading to a difficult outing.
Early Struggles and Persistent Walks
In the July 4th game at Gocheok Sky Dome, Park Jun-hyun started against the Doosan Bears. He pitched 3 and 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, including one home run, and issuing five walks. He also struck out six batters but surrendered five earned runs, ultimately taking his fourth loss of the season against one win. This outing was particularly disappointing as it came after a 69-day wait for his second win since his debut victory on April 26th. The pitcher’s control issues, specifically a high number of walks, hampered his ability to secure the win.
Game Progression: From Stability to Turmoil
The beginning of the game showed promise for Park. In the first inning, he displayed strong pitching, striking out Kim Min-seok and Son Ah-seop with pitches reaching up to 155 km/h. He effectively used his fastball and slider to keep hitters at bay. Even after allowing a hit to Park Jun-sun, he managed to escape the inning without further damage by inducing a ground ball and then picking off a runner at third base. Strong defensive plays, like Yeo Dong-wook’s quick handling of a ground ball at third, also contributed to his early stability.
The second inning also started smoothly. After recording one out, Park walked Park Chan-ho. He then induced a ground ball from Jung Soo-bin and struck out Yoon Joon-ho looking to end the inning, keeping the score at 0-0.
However, the third inning marked a turning point. With two outs, Park’s control faltered significantly. He issued consecutive walks to Son Ah-seop, Park Jun-sun, and Yang Eui-ji, loading the bases. While the walk to Park Jun-sun was on a full count, the walk to Yang Eui-ji came after falling behind 0-2, eventually issuing the walk on the seventh pitch. This precarious situation led to Ahn Jae-seok hitting a line drive to right field that scored two runs, breaking the scoreless tie.
Park continued to struggle, issuing another walk to pinch-hitter Park Chan-ho, again loading the bases. Although he managed to get Jung Soo-bin to hit a ground ball for an out, preventing further runs, the damage had been done.
Continued Control Issues and Home Run
The fourth inning saw further difficulties. After striking out Yoon Joon-ho and Kang Sung-ho, Park allowed a single to Kim Min-seok. He then walked Deuk-geun, putting runners on first and second. This was followed by a single to Son Ah-seop that scored one run, and then a two-run home run to Park Jun-sun, extending the Bears’ lead. This home run, hit on a 151 km/h fastball with a 2-0 count, traveled an estimated 120 meters to left field. It was the second consecutive game Park had given up a home run, dating back to June 23rd against the KIA Tigers.
Early Exit and Season Statistics
Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Park Jun-hyun was removed from the game and handed the ball to Kim Sun-gi. He threw 83 pitches in total. While his fastball velocity reached up to 157 km/h and he mixed in sliders and curves, his command issues led to a significant increase in his ERA, which rose from 2.98 to 3.67.
Park Jun-hyun, the son of Samsung coach Park Seok-min, gained recognition in high school for his powerful fastball, earning him the nickname “the next Ryu Hyun-jin.” His potential was acknowledged to the extent that he received attention from Major League Baseball teams. Upon choosing to play in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), he was selected first overall in the 2026 KBO draft by the Kiwoom Heroes. He signed a record contract worth 700 million won, the second-highest rookie contract in Heroes’ history, following Jang Jae-young’s 900 million won deal.
Prior to this game, Park’s record stood at 1 win and 3 losses with an ERA of 2.98 over 9 appearances. After his last start on June 23rd against the KIA Tigers, where he took the loss after allowing 2 earned runs in 5 innings, he had a period of rest and training. However, the results were not immediately apparent. The Kiwoom Heroes were unable to overcome Park’s struggles and lost the game 8-5 to the Doosan Bears. Consequently, Park’s pursuit of his second win has been pushed to the second half of the season.
