A growing number of Samsung Electronics employees, particularly within the Device Experience (DX) division, are reportedly exploring job opportunities at competitor SK Hynix. This trend appears to be fueled by significant disparities in performance-based bonuses between Samsung’s semiconductor (DS) and DX divisions, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among employees.
Performance Bonus Disparities Spark Exodus
The discontent stems from a substantial difference in performance-based bonuses. While the semiconductor division (DS) has seen exceptional profits due to the recent semiconductor boom, leading to bonuses that are reportedly up to 100 times larger, the DX division, responsible for consumer electronics like TVs, smartphones, and home appliances, received only a company-mandated bonus of 6 million won. This stark contrast has eroded trust in the company among DX employees.
One employee, identified as ‘A’, a five-year veteran of the DX division, expressed deep disappointment. “We can’t continue to work like this, receiving this kind of treatment,” A stated, explaining their decision to prepare an application for SK Hynix. “The company’s response of feigning ignorance about the semiconductor division’s contributions to building our own facilities feels like a profound betrayal.”
The situation has also highlighted frustrations with the initial labor union, which was formed to represent both DS and DX employees. Critics argue that the union prioritized securing bonuses for the DS division during salary negotiations, neglecting the concerns of the DX workforce. This perceived lack of representation has intensified feelings of resentment and helplessness among DX employees.
Employees Express Discontent Through Collective Action
In response to the perceived unfairness, DX employees have begun to engage in collective actions. Some have started wearing black attire to work as a form of protest, while others have changed their internal profile nicknames to phrases like ‘Same Company, Same Rights’ to voice their dissent. These actions signal a growing solidarity and a demand for equitable treatment.
Another DX employee, ‘B’, also in their fifth year, noted that even senior employees are applying for entry-level positions at SK Hynix. “There are quite a few people among the higher ranks who are applying for new positions at Hynix,” B mentioned.
Professor Kim Dae-jong of Sejong University’s Business Administration department commented on the potential impact of this internal conflict. “The feeling of being left behind by specific departments can demotivate the entire organization,” he warned, referencing the ‘one family, different treatment’ sentiment that seems to be brewing.
SK Hynix Recruitment Notices Surface
The situation has been further exacerbated by the appearance of SK Hynix recruitment notices within Samsung’s internal communication channels. A private chatroom for Samsung employees reportedly featured a link to SK Hynix’s job openings, with comments like “A fire has broken out” and “The 2026 exodus has begun” circulating among members. This indicates a proactive effort by some employees to seek alternative employment and highlights the growing urgency of the situation.
Background of the Divisions
Samsung’s DX division is responsible for the development and sales of consumer electronics, including televisions, home appliances, and smartphones. The DS division, on the other hand, focuses on semiconductor manufacturing.
The recent surge in semiconductor demand has led to record profits for the DS division. However, the significant bonus disparity has created a rift, with DX employees feeling undervalued despite their contributions to the company’s overall revenue. The ongoing internal friction underscores the challenges Samsung faces in maintaining employee morale and equitable compensation practices across its diverse business units.
Looking Ahead
The growing discontent among Samsung’s DX employees and their active pursuit of opportunities at SK Hynix signal a critical juncture for the company. Addressing the performance bonus disparities and ensuring fair compensation across all divisions will be crucial for Samsung to retain its talent and maintain its competitive edge in the global technology market.
