The British military began utilizing Starlink in mid-2022 and transitioned to using the Starshield service with existing Starlink terminals starting in 2024. Last year marked the initial purchase of dedicated Starshield terminals, and the military is now actively migrating its operational communications to the Starshield network.

Broader European Push for Defense Autonomy

Additionally, the UK is a key stakeholder in Eutelsat’s OneWeb, a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation that rivals SpaceX’s offerings. However, OneWeb’s capabilities, while significant, still lag behind SpaceX’s Starlink in terms of constellation size, with around 600 satellites compared to Starlink’s over 10,000.
