The Supreme Court is scheduled to deliver its verdict on July 16 regarding allegations against Kim Keon-hee concerning stock price manipulation and the acceptance of luxury goods. On the same day, the court will also announce its decision in the appeal case of Kwon Seong-dong, a member of the People Power Party, who is accused of receiving illegal political funds from the Unification Church.
Supreme Court to Decide on Kim Keon-hee’s Appeal
The Supreme Court’s Second Division, presided over by Justice Park Young-jae, will hear the appeals on July 16 at 10:15 AM. The cases involve alleged violations of the Capital Markets Act, the Political Funds Act, and the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.
Allegations Against Kim Keon-hee
Kim Keon-hee is accused of receiving approximately 62 million won worth of diamond necklaces and two Chanel bags, totaling around 20 million won, from the Unification Church between April and July 2022, when Yoon Kwang-ok served as the World Peace Federation’s chairman. She is also suspected of profiting around 810 million won from stock price manipulation related to Deutsch Motors. Additionally, she is accused of providing poll result data, obtained without consideration from Myung Jae-gyun, to former President Yoon Suk-yeol.
In April, the appellate court found Kim Keon-hee guilty on all charges except for the alleged provision of poll results. She was sentenced to four years in prison, a fine of 50 million won, and a forfeiture of 20.94 million won.
Kwon Seong-dong’s Appeal Also Set for July 16
Kwon Seong-dong, accused of violating the Political Funds Act by receiving 100 million won from the Unification Church, received a sentence of two years in prison and a fine of 100 million won in the appellate court. If this ruling is upheld by the Supreme Court on July 16, Kwon Seong-dong will lose his parliamentary seat.
The Supreme Court’s decision in both cases is highly anticipated, as it will determine the legal standing of the individuals involved and potentially have broader implications.
