North Korea Reacts to US Arms Sales to South Korea
North Korea has issued a stern warning, vowing to strengthen its “self-sterilizing deterrence” in response to recent US approval of significant arms sales to South Korea. The move comes as a direct reaction to the United States greenlighting the sale of advanced weaponry, including air-to-air missiles, to its ally.
Escalating Military Cooperation
A spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry stated that the escalating military cooperation between the US and South Korea is pushing the Korean Peninsula and surrounding regions toward extreme tension. This development is seen by Pyongyang as a deliberate attempt to provoke a crisis, despite international concerns.
US Approves Major Arms Deal
The US Department of Defense recently announced its approval for South Korea to purchase approximately 70 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles and two missile decoy launchers. The deal, valued at $292 million, is intended to enhance South Korea’s defense capabilities, deter potential aggression, and improve interoperability with US forces.
This follows previous approvals for substantial military equipment sales to South Korea. In the preceding month, the US approved the sale of 24 MH-60R multi-mission helicopters and related equipment worth an estimated $3.0 billion, as well as upgrades for AH-64E Apache attack helicopters amounting to approximately $1.2 billion.
North Korea’s Perspective
North Korea has characterized these rapid approvals of military hardware sales as a clear indication of a confrontational stance. The nation asserts that these actions by the US administration are designed to bolster South Korea’s military capacity, thereby creating a heightened military standoff against regional nations, including North Korea itself.
Pyongyang further claims that the large-scale arms provision to South Korea and Japan by the US is a primary driver of military tension in the Korean Peninsula and the broader Asia-Pacific region. The nation has warned of “grave consequences” stemming from these escalating arms procurements.
In its statement, North Korea declared that the continuous US-led military buildup, characterized by a “collective nature,” is provoking serious concerns and reactions from regional countries. This, according to Pyongyang, provides ample justification for strengthening defensive measures.
Call for Self-Defense Measures
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) maintains that in response to the “reckless military buildup” by the US and its allies, the DPRK’s position is clear: to enhance and strengthen its “self-sterilizing deterrence.” This is aimed at neutralizing new threats and maintaining a balance of power in the region.
