LG Electronics has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining NVIDIA’s certification for its 2.5MW (megawatt) class liquid cooling systems, specifically designed for next-generation Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers. This approval marks a crucial step for LG Electronics in accelerating its expansion into the global liquid cooling market, targeting major technology companies.
NVIDIA’s ‘DSX Ready’ Certification for AI Data Centers
NVIDIA awards its ‘DSX Ready’ certification to products that meet stringent design requirements for AI factory platforms. The evaluation process for these systems, particularly for Computer Distribution Units (CDUs) intended for AI factories, focuses on high-capacity units exceeding 2.3MW. LG Electronics’ 2.5MW CDU successfully passed all additional verification requirements, officially earning its designation as a ‘DSX Ready CDU’.
This latest certification follows previous approvals for LG Electronics’ CDUs in July and September. Initially, a 600kW (kilowatt) class CDU received approval, followed by a 1MW class CDU. The recent 2.5MW certification completes LG Electronics’ lineup across key capacity ranges, demonstrating their capability to meet the diverse and demanding cooling needs of modern AI infrastructure.
Complementary Battery Energy Storage System Approval
In conjunction with the CDU certification, LG Energy Solution’s Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) also received the ‘DSX Ready’ approval. This dual certification highlights LG’s comprehensive approach to providing integrated solutions for advanced data center operations.
The Growing Need for High-Capacity Liquid Cooling
The 2.5MW CDU certification is particularly relevant given the escalating heat generated by high-density AI data centers. The evolution of NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture and the subsequent increase in processing power have led to a dramatic rise in power density within server racks, escalating from hundreds of kilowatts to megawatt levels per rack. This necessitates advanced cooling solutions that can efficiently manage the intense heat output.
Traditionally, cooling solutions involved smaller CDUs installed within individual racks (In-Rack). However, the industry is shifting towards an ‘In-Row’ approach. This method groups multiple server racks into a single cooling zone, managed by a single, high-capacity CDU. This standardization is driven by the significant power consumption of the latest AI server racks, which can reach approximately 120kW per rack. Consequently, a group of 20 racks, for example, would require a total cooling capacity of around 2.4 to 2.5MW, establishing 2.5MW as a critical benchmark for high-capacity CDUs in the industry.
Market Trends and Projections
Market research firms project a substantial increase in the adoption of liquid cooling in global AI data centers. TrendForce anticipates that the adoption rate will grow from 14% in 2024 to approximately 60% by 2027. Similarly, Delloro Group has identified liquid cooling as an essential technology for data centers, driven by the escalating power demands of next-generation chipsets.
LG Electronics’ Comprehensive Liquid Cooling Portfolio
With the recent high-capacity product approvals, LG Electronics has solidified its complete product range for liquid cooling solutions. This includes existing high-efficiency equipment such as chillers and Computer Room Air Handlers (CRAHs), complemented by the newly certified CDUs in 600kW, 1MW, and 2.5MW capacities. Furthermore, the company offers Cold Plates designed to directly absorb heat from semiconductor surfaces.
This integrated offering culminates in a customized ‘Chip to Chiller’ total solution. This system connects the entire heat management process, from the chips on the server boards through to the central cooling towers, creating a seamless and efficient thermal management infrastructure.
Future Outlook and Strategy
Lee Jae-seong, President of LG Electronics’ ES Business Division, expressed confidence in the company’s position: “With NVIDIA’s DSX certification as a catalyst, we will begin supplying reliable and efficient cooling solutions to global big tech companies. We aim to secure leadership in the next-generation liquid cooling market.”
LG Electronics plans to focus on overseas data center markets, leveraging its integrated solutions that combine hardware manufacturing with advanced heat management technologies. This strategy is designed to meet the evolving demands of the global AI infrastructure landscape.
The increasing power consumption and heat generation in AI servers are driving the rapid adoption of liquid cooling technologies. LG Electronics’ achievement in securing NVIDIA’s certification for its high-capacity systems positions them as a key player in this rapidly expanding market, ready to supply critical infrastructure to leading technology firms worldwide.
