A South Korean court has ordered manufacturers and retailers of a gas stove sterilizer to pay approximately 630 million South Korean won (about $450,000 USD) in damages to victims who suffered health issues linked to the product. The ruling comes after a lengthy lawsuit filed by individuals who experienced severe health problems, including chronic kidney disease, allegedly caused by the sterilizer.
Background of the Gas Stove Sterilizer Lawsuit
The legal battle centers on a gas stove sterilizer product that was sold from 1994 onwards. Incidents of users developing health problems, particularly kidney damage, began to surface over the years. A significant turning point occurred in 2011 when a cluster of unexplained kidney ailments among infants and pregnant women prompted a large-scale investigation by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC). The investigation ultimately confirmed a causal link between the gas stove sterilizer and the reported kidney damage.
Following these findings, victims, including a woman identified as Ms. Yoo, initiated legal action in 2016 against the manufacturers and sellers of the sterilizer, seeking compensation for their suffering. Ms. Yoo’s case is particularly poignant, as her daughter, who was an infant at the time of exposure, developed chronic kidney disease that has persisted into adulthood.
The Court’s Decision and Potential Resolution
The Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Judge Choi Jong-jin, issued a conciliation proposal on the day preceding the report. This proposal mandates that the defendants, identified as Lotte Shopping and the sterilizer’s manufacturer, pay a total of 630 million won to Ms. Yoo and her daughter.
