The Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) has introduced a dynamic central election committee for the June 3 local elections, named the “Great People’s National Government Presidential Election Committee.” This bold move aims to capitalize on the surging momentum from President Yoon Suk-yeol’s ongoing impeachment trial.
Election Strategy Ties Local Polls to National Ambitions
DPK Floor Leader Jeong Cheong-rae attended the launch event in Seoul on May 9, where he emphasized the committee’s mission. “This local election focuses solely on one goal,” Jeong stated. “It selects a candidate to revitalize the great nation and bolster the pillar of national pride.”
Jeong highlighted the party’s official slogan: “Great People’s National Government, Impeachment Judgment This Time.” He added, “We must seize the current surge heading toward the presidential election. Election success delivers the era’s judgment, and embracing it at the right moment crowns the top election leadership.”
Targeting Key Figures from Rival Camp
The DPK eyes prominent figures linked to the current administration for its election committee chair. Sources indicate targets include former Chief of Staff Han Deok-su and ex-Supreme Court Justice Kim Ui-su, known for ties to former President Yoon through shared legal and political history.
Additional nominees encompass WHO-affiliated vaccine official Ahn Seon-ha, former National Election Commission head Jeong Chaek-yeon, ex-Foreign Minister nominee Kum Hye-jung, and Minjupyeonghwa Tongil Jamunhoe’s vaccine chair. The committee features seven Supreme Court justices and 16 high court chief judges as advisors.
Other vice chairs include Yoon Jeong, Hwang Myeong-seon, Kang Deok-gu, Lee Seong-yun, Mun Jeong-bok, Park Ji-won, and Park Gyu-hwan. Specific roles target Bae Woo-i as Goal National Election Committee Chair, Jo Seong-rae as Chonggwal Election Vice Chair, Han Jeong-ae as Great National Government Vice Chair, and Park Jumin as Otdduk Yuse Chairman, showcasing a diverse legal powerhouse lineup.
