SK Telecom has established a new, dedicated organizational unit directly under its Chief Executive Officer to spearhead the construction of Artificial Intelligence Data Centers (AI DC). This strategic move is part of a broader national initiative to bolster AI computing infrastructure, positioning AI data centers as one of South Korea’s three major mega-projects.
SK Telecom’s Strategic Initiative for AI Data Centers
The newly formed entity, named the ‘AI DC Integrated Promotion Group,’ is led by CEO Ryu Young-sang. Jung Suk-geun, who currently heads SK Telecom’s AI-focused independent business unit (CIC), has been appointed as the head of this new promotion group. The group is structured to encompass both business development and engineering/construction divisions, aiming to streamline the entire process from site selection and construction to customer acquisition for AI data centers.
This integrated approach is designed to accelerate the development and deployment of AI data center facilities. SK Telecom is overseeing a significant undertaking within the SK Group, which involves the construction of AI data centers totaling 15 gigawatts (GW) with an estimated investment of 140 trillion Korean won. The company plans to expand these operations nationwide, starting with a project in Ulsan and subsequently extending to the Yeongnam and Honam regions.
Initial staffing for the promotion group will consist of existing SK Telecom executives in concurrent roles. However, the company has indicated that personnel from other SK Group affiliates may be integrated into the team as needed, reflecting the scale and cross-functional nature of this ambitious project. This collaborative approach aims to leverage the collective expertise and resources across the SK conglomerate to achieve its AI infrastructure goals.
National Push for AI Infrastructure
The South Korean government has identified the expansion of AI computing infrastructure as a critical national priority. The development of AI data centers is a cornerstone of this strategy, designated as one of the ‘Korea’s Big 3 Mega Projects.’ This designation underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a robust environment for AI innovation and development within the country.
In line with the government’s vision, SK Telecom’s private investment plans are a significant component of the national effort. The company’s substantial investment in AI data center infrastructure is expected to provide the foundational computing power necessary for advanced AI research, development, and deployment across
