Investigation Intensifies into Unauthorized Entry at Jamsil Handball Stadium
Authorities are accelerating their investigation into criminal activity that occurred during the sealing of the Jamsil Handball Stadium for its opening. On the 19th, the Songpa Police Station in Seoul announced that the identities of three individuals suspected of unlawfully entering the stadium’s underground facilities on July 7th have been confirmed.
Details of the Incident
The suspects are believed to have bypassed the locks on the mechanical room access door in the underground tunnel, located between Gates 1 and 3 of the stadium, between 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM on July 7th. It is suspected they then entered the premises and filmed the facilities using mobile phones.
Korea Sports Industry Development, the entity responsible for managing the stadium facilities, stated that a resident facility manager observed the intrusion via CCTV and subsequently escorted the individuals out of the premises. The company later filed a complaint. The affected access door was sealed off on July 11th.
Upcoming Legal Actions
Police are planning to summon the individuals for questioning soon. A thorough investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident will be conducted, and charges such as property damage and trespassing will be examined.
Broader Investigation Underway
Separately, an investigation is also ongoing concerning a work obstruction incident related to the entry into the handball stadium’s office by officials from sports organizations affiliated with the Korea Sports Association. Police are investigating nine individuals in this matter and have reportedly identified two suspects, requesting their appearance for questioning.
Stadium’s Historical Context
The Olympic Park Handball Stadium was utilized as a polling station for Songpa District during the 9th National Simultaneous Local Elections (June 3rd Local Elections). Since July 5th, citizens have been blocking the entrances and protesting to prevent the removal of ballot boxes and the transport of ballots.
