US Issues Stark Warning to Iran Over Deal Compliance
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has issued a grave warning to Iran, stating that the nation could face renewed military confrontation if it fails to uphold its commitments under a soon-to-be-signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the United States. Austin also signaled the potential for U.S. military involvement in the process of Iran’s nuclear material disposal.
Military Confrontation Looms if Iran Defaults
In an interview on CBS, Secretary Austin asserted, “If Iran does not abide by the agreement, it will again face war.” He emphasized that while the U.S. does not desire such an outcome, Iran is well aware of the potential consequences, including retaliatory strikes on its military assets and infrastructure.
Austin suggested that recent U.S. pressure tactics have contributed to progress in negotiations. “One of the reasons Iran is at the negotiating table is due to U.S. military pressure,” he stated.
U.S. May Participate in Nuclear Material Disposal
Should the Jongjeon MOU be finalized and a denuclearization agreement reached, the U.S. could become involved in managing Iran’s nuclear material. “We will cooperate with Iran to remove the relevant materials,” Austin explained. “While Iran may be able to possess them, they will not be able to keep them.”
He further elaborated, “We will participate, materially or otherwise, to ensure the processing and removal of nuclear material occur. The U.S. military may take on that role.” This indicates that plans are being considered for the removal of approximately 440 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium believed to be stored in underground Iranian facilities.
Details of Potential Agreement Emerge
reports Reuters, citing high-level Iranian officials, suggest that Iran has agreed to abandon nuclear weapons and immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz. In return, the U.S. would lift sanctions, unfreeze assets, and ease oil production restrictions.
However, Austin cautioned against premature celebrations regarding the release of funds or the lifting of sanctions. “This agreement is conditional on success and implementation,” he stressed. “No funds will be released until Iran fulfills its promises.”
The MOU is expected to include provisions that Iran will not develop, acquire, or possess nuclear weapons. The U.S. intends to maintain a military posture that ensures Iran’s compliance with its commitments over the next 60 days.
