Party Secretary Clarifies President’s Statement on Governance
A senior official from the Democratic Party of Korea has asserted that recent interpretations of the President’s message, suggesting it was a critique of leadership, are a misrepresentation of the President’s intentions. The official stated that the message was aimed at emphasizing the ruling party’s responsibility in governing the nation, particularly following the recent local elections.
Emphasis on Responsibility After Electoral Success
Speaking at a press conference held at the National Assembly, the party’s administrative chief explained, “The message was intended to underscore the ruling party’s accountability for how state affairs should be managed moving forward, rather than targeting any specific individual or leadership group.” This clarification comes in response to commentary suggesting the President’s remarks were directed at specific figures within the party.
President’s Message on Party Accountability
The President had previously posted a lengthy message on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, stating, “The ruling party’s passion must be directed towards the entire nation, not just our own faction.” The message further emphasized the importance of “competence, practical results, and inclusion and integration through the authority granted to the ruling party.” The President urged the governing party to focus on the “language of responsibility.” Some within the ruling party had interpreted these statements as a veiled criticism of the party’s representative, who is facing challenges regarding the abolition of investigative powers. This interpretation, however, has been directly refuted.
Misinterpretations Distort Presidential Intent
The administrative chief reiterated that the message was not an attack on any specific individual or the leadership. “To misinterpret the President’s intentions in this manner is to actually narrow the scope of the President’s broader message,” the official stated.
Analysis of Local Election Results
Record Turnout and Success in Local Elections
The official also highlighted the success of the recent June 3rd local elections. With a participation rate of 3192 individuals and 2294 successful candidates, the election saw a record-breaking 72% success rate. This achievement, the official noted, deserves to be evaluated alongside other political developments.
Regional Performance and Surprising Outcomes
While acknowledging that some areas, such as Seoul, experienced less favorable results for the party, the official pointed to the overall record-breaking victories in local council head elections. For instance, in the Honam region, the number of successful candidates for local council heads increased from 29 out of 41 positions in 2018 to 36 out of 41 this year, with all but five positions in Jeonnam secured. Similarly, in Seoul, the party reversed previous losses, winning more district council seats than in 2022.
Media Coverage and Party Dynamics
The official also called for an objective evaluation of media coverage regarding the upcoming party leadership elections, particularly concerning any potential impact on the general election results. Allegations were made that some media reports, by linking internal party rivalries to the candidacies for party leadership, presented a distorted picture to the public. The official stressed the need for a “calm evaluation” of such reporting. Furthermore, concerns were raised about the accuracy of media reports, with the official stating that if news is not factually presented, the media itself bears responsibility. The example of reports suggesting a candidate was abandoning their role in a national policy initiative to pursue party leadership was cited as potentially misleading and detrimental to the election outcome.
