North Korea Escalates Rhetoric on Conventional Arms in Response to US-South Korea Military Moves
North Korea has issued a stern warning, vowing to bolster its military capabilities in both strategic and conventional arms sectors. This declaration comes as a direct response to recent U.S. approvals for arms exports to South Korea and expanding military cooperation between the two allies.
Demands for Enhanced Conventional Warfare Strategy
A spokesperson for North Korea’s Ministry of Defense addressed the escalating tensions in a statement, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to confronting what it terms the “military buildup of enemy countries that far exceed defensive limits.” The official declared that strengthening military technologies for both strategic and conventional deterrence is a top priority for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s defense ministry.
The spokesperson further stated, “We will continuously make the enemy powers recognize that their reckless arms deals and military buildup are inefficient and meaningless actions.” The statement asserted that North Korea will “never tolerate the attempts to create an imbalance of power in the region through the accelerated reinforcement and advancement of self-reliant deterrence.”
U.S. Arms Sales to South Korea Spark Concern
This strong reaction is largely attributed to the recent U.S. approval of a $16 million arms deal with South Korea, specifically involving Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs). North Korea argues that these U.S. sales are part of South Korea’s defense strategy to enhance its conventional strike capabilities. Pyongyang views this as a move that signals a shift in the role of U.S. forces in the region and is likely to heighten military tensions.
Furthermore, North Korea pointed to the U.S. cooperative stance on the issue of South Korean submarine-launched ballistic missile development and the approved sales of GBU-39 small-diameter bombs and MH-60R multi-mission helicopters for naval operations.
Broader Arms Sales Criticized
North Korea also alleged that the United States is expanding arms sales not only to South Korea but also to its allies, including Japan and Taiwan. Pyongyang characterized these actions as destabilizing factors for regional security.
“The United States’ indiscriminate overseas arms sales activities increase unpredictability in the region and globally, ultimately leading to the abuse of power,” the defense ministry spokesperson criticized. “This is a fundamental factor that creates instability and escalates military tensions on the Korean Peninsula and beyond.”
Analysts Note Shift in North Korean Strategy
Analysts are paying close attention to North Korea’s explicit mention of ‘conventional warfare strategy’ for the first time. Previously, Pyongyang consistently emphasized the reinforcement of its nuclear and missile deterrence. This shift suggests an intention to modernize its conventional arms in response to South Korea’s advancements in precision strike capabilities and its strengthening maritime and air power.
