Cheongdo, South Korea – Bonga Chonggak Kimchi, produced by the Nonghyup cooperative in Cheongdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do, has been selected as the top kimchi to represent South Korea this year. The announcement came during the 15th National Kimchi Product Evaluation, where Bonga’s product received the Grand Prize (Presidential Award). The event, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, recognized nine outstanding domestic kimchi products.
Bonga Chonggak Kimchi Earns Top Honors
Bonga Chonggak Kimchi stood out for its innovative approach to fermentation. The product incorporates traditional Korean medicinal ingredients, such as jujube and astragalus, into its brine. This unique blend slows down the aging process and enhances its shelf life. Judges praised the kimchi for offering a delightful crunchy texture when freshly made, which then matures into a pleasantly sour flavor profile.
The evaluation process is comprehensive, considering not only taste but also factors like hygiene in production facilities, safety standards, and the use of domestically sourced ingredients. This year’s competition notably included foreign consumers and overseas distribution partners in the judging panel, aiming to assess the product’s appeal to international markets and its export potential. This marks the first time the domestic kimchi evaluation has incorporated export competitiveness into its criteria.
Award-Winning Kimchi Showcase
In addition to the Grand Prize, several other exceptional kimchi products received accolades:
- Minister’s Award (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs): Narichan Nonghyup’s ‘Narichan Jin Pogimchi’ secured this prestigious award.

The inclusion of export potential and international consumer preferences in this year’s evaluation reflects a strategic move to bolster the global presence of Korean kimchi. By recognizing products that not only meet domestic quality standards but also resonate with international palates, the competition aims to drive export growth and solidify kimchi’s position as a leading global fermented food.
The focus on international competitiveness is expected to encourage producers to further innovate and enhance their products, ensuring they meet diverse global tastes and regulatory requirements. This initiative underscores South Korea’s commitment to promoting its culinary heritage and capitalizing on the growing international demand for healthy, flavorful, and culturally significant food products.
As Bonga Chonggak Kimchi takes the top honor, it serves as a symbol of the quality and innovation present in South Korea’s kimchi industry. The recognition is anticipated to boost the product’s visibility and market appeal, both domestically and internationally, paving the way for increased export opportunities and further establishing kimchi as a staple in global cuisine.
