Tottenham Supporters Express Strong Desire for Kaoru Mitoma Transfer
Recent discussions among Tottenham Hotspur fans have highlighted a significant interest in acquiring Kaoru Mitoma as a potential successor to Son Heung-min. The sentiment, amplified by observations from the English media, suggests a belief that Japanese players, including Mitoma, are currently undervalued in the football market.
Fan Sentiment Leans Heavily Towards Mitoma
Amidst speculation about potential new signings for Tottenham, including the reported nearing of J.P. van Hecke’s arrival, a question was posed to supporters regarding which former player of manager Roberto De Zerbi they would most like to see join the club. The response was overwhelmingly in favor of Kaoru Mitoma, with a substantial majority of surveyed fans expressing a strong preference for his transfer.
One supporter, Christopher, articulated this sentiment passionately: “I’ve always been a fan of Kaoru Mitoma. I wished Tottenham would sign him long before De Zerbi arrived. In my opinion, Japanese players are severely underestimated. It’s surprising that traditional big clubs don’t show more interest in players like Daizen Maeda (Celtic). Mitoma not only has Premier League experience but has also proven himself over five years. Mitoma is undoubtedly my number one transfer target.”
Another fan, Doug, echoed this, stating, “The player I most want to see is Mitoma. He’s a truly outstanding player, and we desperately need that type of player on the left flank. We haven’t yet found a suitable replacement for Son Heung-min.”
This view is shared by others. Tyler expressed his admiration, “I’ve always liked Mitoma. He reminds me a lot of Son Heung-min in his prime. For that reason alone, I prefer a move for Mitoma over Sarr.” Charles added, “My top choice is Mitoma. He’s an unbelievably talented player and scored a fantastic goal against us last season. Tottenham really needs a fast left-sided resource, and Mitoma would be a sensational signing.” Matt also chimed in, “I hope Mitoma comes to Tottenham. He could be a direct replacement for Son Heung-min and still has several good years ahead. He could also help the development of younger players in that position like Mikey Moore and Matty Tel.”
Analysis Raises Doubts About Mitoma as a Direct Son Replacement
While Mitoma’s quality is widely acknowledged, scrutiny of his statistics and consistency raises questions about his suitability as a direct replacement for Son Heung-min. Mitoma is not statistically prolific for a winger. Across 135 appearances for Brighton, he has scored 27 goals, averaging one goal every five games. While he reached double figures in the league last season, this season has seen him score just three goals.
This contrasts sharply with Son Heung-min’s record of 173 goals in 454 appearances for Tottenham, indicating a significant difference in scoring output. Furthermore, Mitoma’s form has been notably inconsistent since his arrival in the Premier League. After an impressive debut season with 10 goals and 9 assists, he managed only 3 goals and 7 assists in his second season. Although he showed signs of resurgence with 11 goals and 4 assists last season, his current campaign has yielded just 3 goals and 1 assist.
In contrast, Son Heung-min has consistently delivered around 30 attacking points per season, excluding his debut year. The level of consistency demonstrated by Son Heung-min remains a considerable distance from Mitoma’s current output.
