Retailers Prioritize Food Safety Amidst Summer Challenges
Retail companies are launching comprehensive food safety campaigns, focusing on their convenience store chain GS25 and supermarket brand GS The Fresh. These initiatives aim to ensure customers can purchase items like GS25’s ready-to-eat meals and GS The Fresh’s fresh produce with complete confidence.
Strengthening Quality Control Across the Supply Chain
The core of this effort involves reinforcing quality management systems from manufacturing and logistics to in-store operations. The summer season, characterized by high temperatures and humidity, presents increased risks for bacterial growth. This heightened environment can accelerate spoilage and compromise the quality of refrigerated and frozen goods if proper temperature control is not maintained throughout production, distribution, and display.
Particular attention is being paid to convenience store meals and fresh supermarket products, which are often consumed immediately or within a short period after purchase. Therefore, stringent temperature and hygiene management during the distribution process is deemed crucial.
On-Site Inspections and Proactive Quality Checks
To bolster these efforts, quality control experts from GS25 and GS The Fresh plan to conduct direct site visits to partner manufacturing facilities. These visits will include rigorous hygiene assessments and random product sampling to verify safety standards. This proactive inspection process, supplementing the self-inspections conducted by manufacturers, is designed to elevate product safety right from the production stage.
Optimizing Cold Chain Logistics
Preventing quality degradation during food distribution is another key focus. The companies are enhancing their cold chain management for delivery vehicles transporting fresh, ready-to-eat, refrigerated, and frozen foods. A system is being implemented where temperature loggers attached to refrigerated vehicles are double-checked by both delivery drivers and logistics managers. Furthermore, a remote monitoring system is being strengthened to track temperature data in real-time, allowing for immediate detection and response to any anomalies during transit.
Enhanced In-Store Hygiene and Monitoring
Hygiene inspections at the store level are also being expanded. GS25 and GS The Fresh locations will undergo random product quality checks, hygiene inspections of preparation facilities, and product temperature management checks. These in-store assessments will be conducted in collaboration with the inspection agency SGS, ensuring objectivity and professionalism.
For the management of refrigeration equipment, GS Retail’s ‘SEMS’ (Smart Energy Management System) will be utilized. SEMS provides real-time monitoring of optimal temperatures for in-store refrigeration units. Any detected abnormalities trigger immediate alerts to store operators, headquarters, and maintenance partners, facilitating swift corrective actions.
Adjusting Product Operating Standards
In line with the summer food safety drive, certain product operating standards are being tightened. In consultation with partners, GS25 has temporarily reduced the consumption period for some bakery items by one to three days. GS The Fresh has also shortened the operating hours for its in-store food preparation areas, from the previous nine hours to seven hours.
A representative from GS Retail’s Quality Management Team stated, “With the increasing importance of food safety management during the summer months, we have initiated this campaign focused on GS25 and GS The Fresh. Through proactive quality management activities encompassing manufacturing, logistics, and store operations, we are committed to ensuring customers can purchase our products with peace of mind and guarantee the safety of the food they consume.””
