Pitcher Lee Yong-jun’s Injury Sparks Concern for NC Dinos
The NC Dinos are facing a significant challenge as promising relief pitcher Lee Yong-jun has suffered an unexpected hamstring injury. This development casts a shadow over the team’s aspirations and adds to the existing concerns of manager Lee Ho-jun.
The pitcher’s determination is reportedly strong, but the nature of the injury is particularly worrying. The affected area, the back of the thigh, is crucial for pitching, requiring powerful leg drive off the mound.
Medical Assessment Underway
Manager Lee spoke on the 10th, ahead of the team’s game against the Kiwoom Heroes at Gocheok Sky Dome. He detailed Lee Yong-jun’s current condition and the club’s plans for his return to the mound. Lee Yong-jun experienced discomfort during the previous day’s game against Kiwoom. He entered the game in a difficult situation in the bottom of the third inning with two outs and successfully ended the inning without allowing any runs. However, in the bottom of the fourth, he reported pain in his right hamstring (inner thigh area) while in a two-strike count and was subsequently replaced by left-handed pitcher Choi Yeon-ha.
As of the 10th, Manager Lee stated, “He has not yet been to the hospital. I plan to come to the field today to directly assess his condition and make a decision.”
Training Staff’s Cautionary Approach
The manager also revealed that the decision to not immediately remove Lee Yong-jun from the game was influenced by the training staff’s careful deliberation. “Lee Yong-jun himself says the pain isn’t that severe,” Manager Lee explained. “We needed to accurately determine if it’s just slight warmth or something more, so the training staff requested a day or two to monitor the situation.”
Manager Lee confirmed, “We have accepted the training staff’s recommendation and have deferred his entry into the game for today. However, if the situation does not improve by the end of today, we will consider removing him from the roster as early as tomorrow.”
Injury Location Raises Red Flags
The manager’s cautious approach to Lee Yong-jun’s injury stems from the specific location of the pain. The hamstring is vital for generating power when pushing off the mound during a pitch. “The injured area is where the back leg is planted during a pitch,” Manager Lee elaborated. “Coaches who were active players have experienced injuries in that area themselves, so there’s a generally negative outlook. They are saying it won’t be easy [to recover].” This suggests that a return to the mound could be more challenging than initially anticipated.
Lee Yong-jun had been performing exceptionally well since his return from military service on the 1st, showcasing a strong performance in three games with a batting average of .400, two runs batted in, and three strikeouts without allowing any runs. If this injury proves to be long-term, it will undoubtedly be a significant blow to the NC Dinos.
