Jeong Cheong-rae has emerged as the frontrunner in the race for the leadership of the Democratic Party, according to a recent public opinion poll. The survey indicates that Jeong holds a significant lead among voters expressing a preference for the party’s next leader. Kim Min-seok follows in second place, with Song Young-gil trailing in third.
Key Findings from the Leadership Poll
The poll, conducted by Media Tomato in collaboration with News Tomato, surveyed 1,033 adults nationwide on August 27-28. The results reveal that when voters were asked to rank their preferred candidates for the party leadership, Jeong Cheong-rae garnered 36.9% of the first-choice votes. Kim Min-seok received 28.0%, and Song Young-gil secured 9.2%.
A notable portion of respondents, 21.8%, indicated that they did not have a preferred candidate, while 4.1% stated they were unsure. The Democratic Party’s leadership selection process incorporates a preferential voting system, where voters rank candidates from first to third choice. This system was adopted for the party’s August 17 convention.
Understanding the Preferential Voting System
The preferential voting system used in this election is designed to reflect a broader range of voter preferences. In this method, the candidate with the fewest first-choice votes is eliminated. Subsequently, the votes for the eliminated candidate are redistributed to the remaining candidates based on their second-choice rankings. This process continues until a clear leader emerges.
Examining the second-choice preferences in the poll provides further insight into the dynamics of the race. Among second choices, Song Young-gil received 33.9%, Kim Min-seok garnered 12.9%, and Jeong Cheong-rae obtained 9.0%. A substantial 37.4% of respondents did not select a second-choice candidate, and 6.7% were undecided.
Regional and Demographic Breakdowns
The poll also offered a glimpse into regional preferences. In Seoul, Jeong Cheong-rae led with 32.4% of first-choice votes, narrowly ahead of Kim Min-seok’s 31.5%. In the Incheon and Gyeonggi provinces, Jeong secured 39.4% compared to Kim’s 24.5%. The Honam region showed a closer contest, with Jeong at 37.3% and Kim at 34.9%.
In the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, Jeong Cheong-rae held a strong lead with 38.7%, while Kim Min-seok garnered 21.8%. Similarly, in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, Jeong received 38.7% of first-choice votes, with Kim at 28.9%. However, in the Gangwon and Jeju regions, Kim Min-seok was the preferred candidate with 33.3%, compared to Jeong Cheong-rae’s 20.7%.
Party Supporter Preferences
Within the Democratic Party’s own supporter base, Kim Min-seok emerged as the most preferred candidate for the leadership, receiving 44.9% of first-choice votes. Jeong Cheong-rae followed with 38.9%, and Song Young-gil with 11.2%.
Supporters of the now-dissolved Justice Party showed a strong preference for Jeong Cheong-rae, with 54.4% selecting him as their first choice. Kim Min-seok received 15.2%, and Song Young-gil garnered 13.0%.
Interestingly, among supporters of the People Power Party, Jeong Cheong-rae also led with 38.7% of first-choice votes. Kim Min-seok received 10.1%, and Song Young-gil garnered 5.9%. This suggests a degree of cross-party appeal for Jeong Cheong-rae among certain segments of the electorate.
Broader Leadership Aspirations within the Party
The upcoming Democratic Party convention will consider not only delegate votes but also public opinion polls, which account for 30% of the overall decision. Beyond the top contenders for the party leadership, the poll also gauged preferences for eight candidates vying for top committee positions.
In this separate survey for top committee positions, Choi Min-hee led with 15.0% of first-choice votes. Park Sung-won followed closely with 14.7%. Other candidates included Seo Mi-hwa (6.8%), Kim Yong (6.0%), Lee Sung-yoon (5.4%), Han Min-soo (4.7%), Im Mi-ae (4.6%), and Kim Young-ho (2.6%).
A significant portion of respondents, 29.2%, expressed no preference for these committee positions, and 11.0% were undecided.
Preferences Among Democratic Party Supporters for Committee Roles
Among Democratic Party supporters specifically for these committee roles, Choi Min-hee received 13.3% of first-choice votes. Park Sung-won garnered 11.1%, followed by Seo Mi-hwa (8.7%), Lee Sung-yoon (6.5%), Kim Yong (6.4%), Im Mi-ae (5.2%), Han Min-soo (2.9%), and Kim Young-ho (2.6%).

The survey was conducted using an automated voice response (ARS) system. The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus 3.0 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
