Key Opposition Figures Tour Jeonbuk, Seeking Regional Support
Prominent figures within the opposition party, former leader Jung Cheong-rae and former Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, are scheduled to visit the Jeonbuk region on June 25th. Their visits coincide with a two-day workshop for successful candidates in the June 3rd local elections, to be held in Jeongeup.
Jung Cheong-rae, who recently resigned from his party leadership position, effectively announcing his bid for re-election, has chosen to travel to the Honam region immediately following his announcement. Kim Min-seok, who had been in China for the Boao Forum, returned late the previous day and is also heading to Jeonbuk directly after his arrival.
Strategic Focus on the Honam Region
Both political figures are identified as strong contenders for the upcoming party leadership. They are intensifying their efforts to engage with party members in the Honam region, a traditional stronghold for the opposition party. This region accounts for one-third of the party’s national committee members, making it a crucial battleground for the leadership election.
Jung Cheong-rae has visited the Honam region six times since the June 3rd local elections, meeting with party members. Kim Min-seok also toured the region between June 16th and 19th. The strategic importance of Honam is underscored by the fact that over one-third of the party’s decision-making body members are based there, positioning it as a key determinant of success in the upcoming leadership contest.
