Court Battle Erupts Over Beluga Rehoming
Geoje City World, a zoological park, has initiated legal proceedings against the Ministry of Environment, seeking approval for the relocation of its beluga whales. The park claims that recent changes to the Wild Animal Protection Act have made it increasingly difficult to conduct animal experience programs, leading to considerations of temporarily halting facility operations.
Legal Challenge Filed
According to legal filings, Geoje City World submitted an administrative lawsuit to the Changwon District Court in March. The suit challenges the Nakdong River Flood Control Office’s decision to deny a permit for the relocation of beluga whales, which are listed as an internationally endangered species.
Dispute Over Documentation
Geoje City World had been preparing to move its beluga whales and other animals to different locations abroad. However, the Nakdong River Flood Control Office reportedly rejected the relocation permit, citing insufficient documentation. The park asserts that all necessary documents were properly prepared and has filed the lawsuit to contest this decision.
Concerns Over Animal Welfare
The park has faced criticism from environmental groups regarding the management of its beluga population, with concerns raised about animal deaths and potential violations of the Wild Animal Protection Act. These issues came to the forefront earlier this month when a newborn beluga died just four days after birth, sparking debate about breeding practices within the zoo’s facilities.
