Youth Employment Elevated as Top Policy Priority
In a recent address, a senior government official declared that improving the youth employment situation will be the administration’s foremost policy objective, pledging to dedicate significant effort to this goal. This statement was made during an emergency economic ministers’ meeting held earlier today in Seoul.
The official highlighted the prevailing economic climate, characterized by persistent inflation stemming from geopolitical conflicts and considerable volatility in financial markets. This backdrop has exacerbated the fragility of the job market, with recent data indicating a decline in employment figures for May.
Future Growth Engines Under Development
Regarding the government’s ambitious initiative to secure world-leading technological capabilities, the official outlined specific plans. A roadmap for next-generation strategic technology is slated for completion by mid-June. Following this, substantial research and development projects will commence, in collaboration with key industry players and demand-driven enterprises.
Further initiatives include accelerating the commercialization of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). This push will be supported by a special SMR promotion act scheduled to take effect in September. The government also intends to bolster the development and on-site validation of advanced technologies. These include on-sensor AI, which integrates sensor and artificial intelligence capabilities, actuators for humanoid robots, and next-generation batteries.
Regional Development to Drive Economic Revitalization
Emphasizing the importance of decentralized growth, the official stated, “The future engines for economic recovery must begin at the regional level.” To this end, the government plans to embark on a nationwide tour starting next week. This initiative will involve directly visiting various regions to identify and nurture their unique growth drivers, providing systematic support for their development.
Nationwide Safety Inspections Launched Following Incidents
In light of recent industrial accidents, including a major fire at a chemical facility in Daejeon and an explosion at a Hanwha Aerospace facility in the same city, the government announced a comprehensive safety assessment. A large-scale inspection of all factories and warehouses nationwide will be initiated to address safety concerns and prevent future tragedies.
