Hwang Hee-chan Ready to Shine in Third World Cup Appearance
Hwang Hee-chan, set to compete in his third World Cup, has emphasized his commitment to serving as a vital information source for the South Korean national team. Speaking at the team’s training base in Saopopan, Mexico, Hwang stated, “This is my third World Cup, and it’s an honor. My role is to contribute to the team in every match and focus on areas where I can excel.”
The forward, who experienced the dream stage of the 2018 Russia World Cup and played a crucial role in the Round of 16 qualification in the 2022 Qatar World Cup with a goal against Portugal, is focused on meticulous preparation. “We are communicating and preparing thoroughly to create such moments. My current condition is good,” Hwang confirmed.
Overcoming Challenges for a Resurgent Performance
The past year presented significant hurdles for Hwang. His club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, endured a challenging season, culminating in relegation. He also faced controversy earlier this year. This World Cup presents a potential turning point in his career. “I don’t think about needing to achieve something for my personal record when I’m with the national team. I’ve always played by putting myself aside for the team. My personal good performance has led to good team results. I have a lot of experience with that. I want to do well now and help the team as much as possible,” he explained.
The current squad features a strong contingent of players born in 1996, including Hwang Hee-chan and Kim Min-jae of Bayern Munich, and Hwang In-beom of Red Star Belgrade. “We’ve been close since we were young and have communicated about everything. We’ve been to many tournaments together, but this one feels particularly special. I want to be helpful by fulfilling my role in the middle of the team,” Hwang stated.
Strategic Approach to Opening Match Against Czech Republic
Hwang is expected to feature as a left-sided attacker in a likely 3-4-2-1 formation. He recently marked his return to scoring in an international friendly against Trinidad and Tobago with a penalty kick. Analysis suggests that the Czech Republic, the first opponent, has vulnerabilities in their defensive midfield. “We are analyzing our opponents daily through meetings and preparing our offensive strategies. In national team matches, especially the World Cup, results are paramount. Achieving a result in the first game is crucial,” Hwang emphasized.
Reflecting on Past Teammates and Future Encounters
The Czech Republic squad includes his current club teammate, Vladimír Coufal. In the second group match, Mexico boasts former teammate Raúl Jiménez. Hwang shared his thoughts on facing them: “I tried to create great moments with Raúl, similar to Son Heung-min and Harry Kane. I’ve scored goals assisted by Raúl. Playing alongside such a great player was a good memory. It is an honor to face him as an opponent.”
Regarding Coufal, Hwang described him as, “One of the closest players on my team. We often eat together and share many conversations. Before the tournament, we playfully exchanged words about which team would win. Coufal is intelligent and tactically outstanding. Players and coaches rely on him heavily. I consider him a player to watch. While he is a good player, we also have many excellent players. I want to lead the team to victory by sharing detailed insights with my teammates.”
The national team will commence their World Cup campaign against the Czech Republic on November 12th at the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara.
