Chairman Chung Yong-jin Assumes Top Executive Positions at Key Shinsegae Affiliates
Chung Yong-jin, Chairman of Shinsegae Group, is stepping into the roles of CEO for E-Mart and Shinsegae Property, two of the conglomerate’s core subsidiaries. This move signifies his commitment to fully embracing executive responsibilities and guiding the future direction of these pivotal companies.
Shinsegae Group announced that Chairman Chung has been nominated as the representative director for Shinsegae Property. The company is expected to convene a board meeting soon to recommend him as a registered director. Following shareholder approval, a subsequent board meeting will finalize his appointment as CEO. E-Mart also plans to nominate Chairman Chung as its representative director during its regular personnel appointments this year, with final confirmation anticipated after next year’s shareholder meeting.
Strategic Move to Drive Growth and Resolve Issues
This strategic appointment is driven by a desire to swiftly address pressing current issues and accelerate the group’s future growth. A spokesperson for Shinsegae Group stated that Chairman Chung is keenly aware of the market’s demand for clear accountability in corporate management. He expressed his intent to actively seek evaluation from the board and shareholders in his capacity as representative director.
The decision also comes amidst ongoing discussions regarding Starbucks Korea, where E-Mart is the largest shareholder. Chairman Chung’s increased involvement is seen as a move to more proactively manage Starbucks Korea and the Shinsegae Group’s investment in the brand. As E-Mart’s CEO, he will hold significant responsibility for Starbucks Korea’s board composition and operational oversight.
Expanding Leadership Portfolio
With these new appointments, Chairman Chung will now participate in the board meetings of three key group affiliates. Last year, he was appointed Chairman of the board of AG Global Holdings (formerly Grand Ole’s Holdings), a joint venture between Shinsegae Group and Alibaba International, playing a role in revitalizing its competitiveness in the e-commerce market.
His leadership at Shinsegae Property, which oversees future landmark projects like Starfield Cheongna, underscores a vision for driving new business growth. Shinsegae Property has been actively pursuing the establishment of AI data centers, including a partnership with U.S.-based Reflixion AI in March, and Chairman Chung’s direct involvement as CEO signifies full commitment to both current operations and future growth strategies.
Professional Management Structure
Shinsegae Property has also nominated Lee Hyung-chun, a seasoned professional, as its new executive director to lead alongside Chairman Chung. Lee has a proven track record, including his role in the construction of Starfield Cheongna. A Shinsegae Group official explained that the new executive directors will focus on current operations and organizational management to improve profitability, while Chairman Chung will oversee medium-to-long-term vision establishment and enhance corporate value, fostering synergistic business operations.
For Starbucks Korea, Shin Dong-woo, former head of Shinsegae Property’s support division, has been appointed as the new executive director. Shin previously served as the strategic planning head for Starbucks Korea and, most recently, as the head of the support division and finance manager at Shinsegae Property, responsible for strategic planning and company survival.
