Yang Min-hyuk’s Tottenham Prospects Dim
The outlook for Yang Min-hyuk to secure a regular spot in Tottenham’s first team next season appears challenging. Reports indicate that Tottenham is evaluating the futures of 17 players currently out on loan, with Yang Min-hyuk among those under scrutiny.
Loan Stints and Limited Appearances
A journalist specializing in Tottenham news highlighted Yang Min-hyuk’s situation, noting that his current standing seems even further removed from regular first-team action than when he initially joined the club two years ago. Tottenham loaned him to Queens Park Rangers last season to aid his adaptation to English football. He then moved to Portsmouth in the first half of the current season, making 16 appearances and contributing 3 goals and 1 assist.
However, his subsequent loan to Cobham, described as one of Tottenham’s worst loan experiences historically, saw him fail to make an appearance in the final 15 games, accumulating just 29 minutes of playing time. With four years remaining on his contract, further loan spells are anticipated.
Frustrating Half-Season and Missed Opportunities
Yang Min-hyuk initially joined Tottenham in December 2024. He began his integration into the English football scene by spending the latter half of the 2024-2025 season on loan at Queens Park Rangers. The 2025-2026 season saw him continue his development at Portsmouth, where he experienced both highs and lows, managing to score goals and earn points in the first half of the season.
The decision to move him in the winter transfer window proved to be a setback. Following a move to Cobham at the request of Lampard, Yang Min-hyuk’s appearances were limited to just three games. He failed to register his name on the scoresheet and effectively disappeared from the squad. Had he remained at Portsmouth, his playing time might have been more consistent. The lack of substantial match experience in the second half of the season is a significant concern.
An earlier adaptation and strong performances in England could have caught the attention of manager Postecoglou for the upcoming season. However, with his name repeatedly omitted from the Cobham squad, the chances of him breaking into the Tottenham first team next season seem slim.
Son Heung-min’s Foresight
Tottenham captain and star player Son Heung-min had previously anticipated such challenges. Following his transfer confirmation in 2024, Son stated, “It will be difficult. The Premier League is truly not easy. To become a top-level player, everything must be perfect – language, culture, personality, living away from family, everything. I’m not trying to scare you, but this is a realistic story that can help.”
He further elaborated, “You might feel you’ve done well in the K League, but here, young players are trying to seize opportunities every day. Many players will be vying for the same positions. I will help Yang Min-hyuk grow into a world-class player, but I have no intention of just giving up my spot. I have to elevate myself to a higher level.”
A cold summer appears to be on the horizon for Yang Min-hyuk. Attention is now focused on how his 2026-2027 season will unfold, especially after failing to make a significant impact during his loan spells.
