Seoul Police Probe Hundreds of Election-Related Crimes
Authorities in Seoul are currently investigating a total of 304 cases related to the recent June 3rd local elections. The investigations encompass a range of alleged offenses, with a significant focus on assaults against election officials.
Assaults on Election Workers Under Scrutiny
As of recent reports, three individuals have been taken into custody in connection with these incidents. All three are suspected of assaulting election workers. These actions are being taken seriously as they directly interfere with the democratic process.
AI-Related Election Violations Also Being Examined
In addition to traditional offenses, the police are also actively investigating election violations involving artificial intelligence (AI). This is in line with recent amendments to public election laws that specifically address AI-related misconduct. Currently, eight cases of alleged AI misuse are under investigation.
The head of the Seoul Police Agency addressed the concerns surrounding potential AI-driven election interference. While acknowledging the possibility of increased AI-related offenses and the strengthening of preparatory measures, officials noted that the number of such incidents has not yet reached the level of initial concern. “There have been no types of incidents that were not anticipated,” stated the agency head during a regular press briefing.
Focus on Voter Protection and Ballot Security
Moving forward, police efforts will be concentrated on protecting the rights of candidates for the remainder of the election period and bolstering security at polling stations. Plans are in place to further enhance security measures on the day of the main election by issuing emergency alerts and increasing patrols at polling locations.
