KIA Tigers pitcher Yoon Young-chul, a highly touted prospect, made his second appearance in the minor league’s Future League on June 19th, following his recovery from Tommy John surgery. The 22-year-old left-hander took the mound against the Ulsan Whales but struggled, pitching 3 and 2/3 innings and allowing 5 hits, 5 walks, and 4 earned runs. He threw 84 pitches in the outing.
Yoon Young-chul’s Performance Against Ulsan Whales
Yoon’s outing began with challenges in the first inning. He allowed the leadoff batter, Park Min-seok, to reach base on a full-count walk. The next batter, Lee Min-seok, was retired on a line drive. However, Kim Seo-won hit an RBI triple to left field, giving the Whales an early lead. Despite facing a bases-loaded situation with no outs, Yoon managed to strike out one batter swinging and induce a ground ball out to end the inning, limiting the damage.
The second inning also proved difficult for Yoon. He surrendered a single to Kim Si-wan and walked Min-seong-woo on five pitches. With runners on first and second, Yoon successfully navigated a ground ball double play from Kim Soo-in, moving to second and first base. He then ended the inning by getting Park Jae-hyung to fly out to left field with two outs and runners on second and third, preventing any runs from scoring.
Yoon found a rhythm in the third inning, retiring the side in order with three consecutive fly outs. Park Min-seok, Lee Min-seok, and Kim Seo-won were all retired on fly balls to right and left field, respectively. However, in the fourth inning, with his team leading 4-1, Yoon’s struggles resurfaced.
He struck out the leadoff batter, Hol, for the third out but then allowed consecutive doubles to No-gang-min and Kim Si-wan, resulting in one run. Min-seong-woo was then walked. With runners on first and second, a wild pitch advanced the runners to third and second. Kim Soo-in struck out swinging for the second out. Yoon then walked Park Jae-hyung, loading the bases. The inning concluded with Park Min-seok hitting a two-run double to left-center, tying the game at 4-4. Yoon was then replaced by Jeong Chan-hwa, who struck out Lee Min-seok to end the threat.
Background: Yoon Young-chul’s Career and Injury
Yoon Young-chul was drafted by the KIA Tigers in the first round, second overall, of the 2023 KBO Draft. He was considered a top prospect, with the first overall pick going to Kim Seo-hyun of the Hanwha Eagles. In his debut season in 2023, Yoon immediately joined the starting rotation, posting a record of 8 wins and 5 losses with a 4.04 ERA in 25 games (122.2 innings pitched).
His performance continued into 2024, where he recorded 7 wins and 4 losses with a 4.19 ERA in 18 games (81.2 innings pitched). However, his season took a downturn in 2025. He struggled, finishing with a 2-7 record and a 5.58 ERA in 13 games (50 innings pitched). Following an outing on July 8th against the Hanwha Eagles where he gave up 4 runs in 2 innings, Yoon was removed from the active roster due to a shoulder injury.
He underwent rehabilitation and eventually had Tommy John surgery on his elbow in September, sidelining him for approximately a year. After a year of recovery and physical rehabilitation, Yoon made his return to the mound on June 11th in a Future League game against the Hanwha Eagles. He pitched 6 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 walks with no earned runs, a promising performance in his first outing back.
Post-Surgery Comeback Game Details
The June 19th game against the Ulsan Whales marked Yoon’s second appearance since his return. While his previous outing was encouraging, this game saw him struggle with control and effectiveness. The KIA Tigers managed to regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Park Sang-joon hit a two-run home run with two outs and runners on second, making the score 6-4.
In the fifth inning, with one out and runners on first and third, Kwon Dong-gyeol hit a two-run double to center field, extending the lead to 8-4. The Ulsan Whales began to rally in the sixth inning. Kim Seo-won hit a two-run double to right field with one out and runners on base, followed by an RBI single from No-gang-min with two outs and a runner on first, closing the gap to 8-7.
The Whales tied the game at 8-8 in the seventh inning due to consecutive singles from Min-seong-woo and Park Moon-soo, and a wild pitch. Ulsan then took the lead in the eighth inning, scoring three runs to make it 11-8. They added another run on a ground ball single with runners on first and third, extending their lead to 12-8.
The KIA Tigers attempted to rally in the bottom of the eighth. Lee Chang-jin drew a walk with the bases loaded, and Park Sang-joon and Oh Seon-woo followed with consecutive singles, bringing the score to 11-9. However, with the bases loaded, Lee Young-jae hit a ground ball and Choi Jeong-yong lined out to end the inning and the threat. The Ulsan Whales secured the victory with a final score of 12-9.
Looking Ahead for Yoon Young-chul
Yoon Young-chul’s journey back from Tommy John surgery is a testament to his dedication and resilience. While his second Future League start was a setback, it is a common part of the recovery process for pitchers. The KIA Tigers organization will likely continue to monitor his progress closely, providing him with the necessary support and opportunities to regain his form. His potential remains high, and the team will be hoping he can eventually return to the major league rotation and contribute significantly.
