US naval forces in the Strait of Hormuz have diverted roughly 58 merchant vessels heading to Iran and destroyed cargo on four ships as part of an intensified maritime blockade. This operation aims to prevent entries into Iranian ports amid escalating regional tensions.
CENTCOM Details Blockade Actions
US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on May 9 (local time) via X that, since April 13, forces have altered the courses of 58 merchant ships to block access to Iranian sea lanes. Cargo on four vessels was destroyed during these interceptions.
The previous day, similar actions targeted two Iranian oil tankers attempting to enter Iranian harbors in the Arabian Sea, where their cargo was also neutralized.
Background of the Major Iran Maritime Blockade
Following a US-Iran military exchange on April 7 in a Houthi cooperation zone, American forces shifted to full alert. Iran claimed it seized a US vessel during the incident, but US officials deny the report. Tensions persist as Iran maintains the seized ship without release.
Trump Vows Retaliation
US President Donald Trump addressed Iran’s alleged attack on an American oil tanker, promising comprehensive retaliation. “Even if alone, tonight they will receive a letter,” Trump stated, signaling firm resolve.
Trump indicated hopes for any broader war agreement to include Iran exporting its strategic oil reserves to the US and halting strikes on underground nuclear facilities. Iran has yet to issue an official stance on these developments.
