Sudden and Shocking Death
Lee Sang-yong experienced discomfort from persistent cough and cold symptoms. He sought treatment at a nearby hospital in Seoul’s Seocho-gu district but suddenly collapsed on the street. Paramedics rushed him to the facility in cardiac arrest. Despite intensive care, he passed away on May 9, 2025, from pneumonia.
His agency confirmed that he had no prior major chronic conditions. The abrupt news triggered an outpouring of tributes from the entertainment industry and fans alike. Family members, who were in Hong Kong at the time, hurried back to South Korea.
Rise to National Fame
Lee launched his broadcasting career in 1971 as an MC on the popular children’s show Ppoda I Ajeossi, earning widespread acclaim. He later popularized the catchphrase “Gohyang Ajossi!” across various programs, solidifying his status as a national MC.
