Former Major League Baseball star Trevor Bauer, who has faced significant off-field challenges and scrutiny since his departure from MLB, has announced his intention to continue his playing career in the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM). Bauer confirmed on December 15th (KST) via his social media channels that he has signed with the Estrellas de Oriente for the upcoming winter league season, expressing a desire to contribute to the team’s championship aspirations.
“I have signed with the Estrellas de Oriente and want to help them win a championship,” Bauer stated. “I don’t care if people dislike me or criticize me. I look forward to meeting you all.” This announcement marks another chapter in the tumultuous journey of a pitcher once considered one of baseball’s elite.
From Cy Young Contender to MLB Suspension
Trevor Bauer burst onto the professional scene in 2012, making his Major League Baseball debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a highly touted prospect. After stints with the Cleveland Indians (now Guardians) and the Cincinnati Reds, Bauer reached the pinnacle of his career in 2019 with the Reds, where he achieved a National League-leading 1.73 ERA and secured the Cy Young Award. His dominant performance earned him a lucrative contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020.
However, Bauer’s tenure with the Dodgers was short-lived and overshadowed by serious allegations. He was placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball in July 2021 following accusations of sexual assault and domestic violence. An investigation by MLB ensued, resulting in a lengthy suspension. Although he was not criminally charged and reached a civil settlement, the league ultimately suspended him for 324 games, a ban later reduced to 194 games after an appeal. The Dodgers eventually released Bauer in January 2023.
International Stints and Continued Challenges
Following his release from the Dodgers, Bauer sought opportunities abroad. He signed with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league. While his performance on the field was respectable, his time in Japan was marred by controversy. After completing the season, Bauer posted a message on social media that appeared to support the release of a U.S. serviceman involved in a fatal traffic accident in Japan, which sparked widespread criticism and ultimately led to his departure from the country.
Bauer then moved to the Mexican League, joining the Diablos Rojos del México. He later returned to Japan, signing again with Yokohama for the 2023 season. However, his performance that year—4 wins, 10 losses, and a 4.51 ERA over 21 games and 133.1 innings—was not enough to secure a contract renewal. His agent indicated that Bauer had received offers from teams in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) and the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) but expressed a strong desire to return to the United States.
He ultimately signed with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. Despite a month-long layoff due to a traffic accident, facial injuries, and a sprained right elbow, Bauer showcased his talent, pitching 42 innings with a 5-1 record, a 2.36 ERA, and 66 strikeouts. He later joined the Mexican League’s Diablos Rojos del México in June, posting a 4-1 record and a 4.41 ERA.
Criticism of Former Teams and Gratitude for Support
Throughout his career challenges, Bauer has not shied away from expressing his feelings about his former MLB team, the Dodgers. In a podcast appearance in July, he voiced his resentment, claiming that after the sexual assault allegations surfaced, Dodgers management initially offered support, saying, “Let’s get through this together.” However, he alleged that once he left the team, front office personnel began to speak negatively about him. Bauer further asserted that the Dodgers’ front office instructed players and coaches not to speak with him and leaked false information to the media.
“I have no desire for them to do well,” Bauer stated regarding the Dodgers’ success. “They treated me so poorly.” He reiterated his belief that he should never have played for such an organization.
Despite his harsh criticism of the Dodgers organization, Bauer expressed deep gratitude for the support he received from former teammate Mookie Betts. “Mookie Betts was one of the few people who stood by me,” Bauer remarked. “Even back then, he told people in the organization, ‘Bauer needs to be brought back. He’s innocent.’ I truly respect him for that.”
Looking Ahead in the Dominican Republic
Bauer’s decision to join the Estrellas de Oriente in the Dominican league signifies his ongoing commitment to professional baseball. The league is known for its competitive level and serves as a significant platform for players seeking to showcase their skills. Bauer’s stated indifference to public opinion and his focus on performance suggest he is determined to let his pitching do the talking as he navigates this new phase of his career.
His journey has been marked by extraordinary talent on the mound, juxtaposed with significant off-field controversies. As he prepares to pitch in LIDOM, the baseball world will undoubtedly be watching to see how he performs and whether he can regain the form that once made him an award-winning pitcher.
