Digital Trust and Child Protection Forum Addresses Emerging Threats
A significant forum focused on digital trust and the protection of children and adolescents was convened on the 17th, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss critical issues facing the online world. The event specifically addressed the growing concerns surrounding misinformation, deepfakes, and the safeguarding of minors in the digital landscape.
Participants included experts from government, industry, the legal field, and academia, all converging to find solutions for the evolving challenges presented by advanced technology. The forum, titled ‘Online Safety Forum: Building Digital Trust,’ aimed to foster a collaborative approach to these complex issues.
Key Discussions and Perspectives
Christy Aaid, Vice President of Trust and Safety at Google, emphasized the need for technologically driven solutions grounded in a deep understanding of child development. “Technological innovation rooted in a profound understanding of child development is essential,” Aaid stated. She further elaborated that Google operates a system designed to incorporate the insights of child development experts into its product design and policy-making stages.
Lee Joon-ki, a representative lawyer, highlighted the new responsibilities that advancements in artificial intelligence and digital platforms bring. “The development of artificial intelligence and digital platforms has presented us with new challenges in digital trust and the protection of children and adolescents,” Lee remarked. “It is imperative that industry, academia, and government collaborate to devise effective countermeasures.”
Ryu Jae-myung, Second Deputy Director of the Ministry of Science and ICT, commented on the need for legal frameworks to adapt alongside technological progress. “Even fundamental laws concerning artificial intelligence must evolve in tandem with technological changes,” Ryu stated. Likewise, Ryu Shin-hwan, an emergency committee member of the Korea Communications Standards Commission, pledged to prioritize the creation of a safe digital environment for children and adolescents. “We will do our utmost to build a digital environment where children and adolescents can use it safely,” Shin-hwan affirmed.
Addressing Misinformation and AI’s Impact
Subsequent seminars delved into strategies for combating online fraud and deepfakes in the AI era, under the theme ‘Building Digital Trust in the Age of AI.’ During a session focused on ‘Child and Adolescent Development in the Digital and AI Era,’ Google advocated for empowering children to protect themselves in digital spaces and utilize technology as a tool for learning and growth.
The discussions underscored a shared commitment to navigating the complexities of the digital age, with a particular focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of younger generations online.
