The Samsung Lions have extended their winning streak to three games, solidifying their sole possession of first place in the league standings. Their latest triumph came against the KIA Tigers on August 8th at Daegu Samsung Lions Park, where they secured a 6-4 victory. The win was significantly propelled by a clutch two-run, game-deciding double from Choi Hyoung-woo and a pivotal two-run home run from Park Sung-gyu, marking a career milestone for the slugger.
Lions Overcome KIA Tigers in Tense Matchup
Samsung’s victory improved their season record to 73 wins against 33 losses and 4 ties, maintaining their commanding lead. This win was particularly significant as it broke a recent slump against the KIA Tigers, a team that had previously held an advantage over Samsung manager Park Jin-man’s squads. The Lions’ starting pitcher, Choi Won-tae, delivered a solid performance, allowing one earned run over five innings. The team consistently added to their lead throughout the game, effectively controlling the momentum against KIA.
Looking ahead, the Lions appear well-positioned to carry this strong performance into potential future playoff matchups, potentially alleviating the pressure and apprehension that has sometimes accompanied games against this opponent. For the KIA Tigers, the loss was a missed opportunity to climb into third place in the standings. Despite a loss by the LG Twins on the same day, KIA’s defeat meant they could not overtake their rivals, remaining with a 66-2-53 record.
Injury Concerns and Player Performances
Manager Park Jin-man of the Samsung Lions expressed concern over the health of veteran pitcher Lee Seung-hyun, who is currently sidelined with an injury. The absence of key players like Baek Jung-hyun, Choi Ji-gwang, and Lee Jae-hee due to injuries also presents challenges, with their return to the regular season lineup uncertain. Fortunately, Lee Jae-hyun, who sustained an injury to his elbow in a previous game, was cleared of any serious issues and was able to play. In his absence, the team is looking to pitcher Miyagori Satoshi to fill the void. Satoshi has been performing well recently, notching his first saves and holds.
Park Jin-man noted, “Satoshi is stepping up to fill Lee Seung-hyun’s role. Our pitching has been strong from the start, and he’s gaining confidence.” He also commented on Kim Do-young’s 40th home run, suggesting it might be a positive sign, stating, “Perhaps it’s a sign of greater success to come later.” Looking towards the Asian Games period, plans are in place for Byun Woo-hyuk, Park Min, and Park Jae-hyun to cover for Kim Do-young, while Kang Baek-ho and Park Jae-hyun are expected to fill in for Park Min and Park Jae-hyun respectively. Seong Yeong-tak’s absence will be covered by Jeong Hye-young.
Key Players and Game Highlights
The Samsung Lions’ lineup featured Kim Ji-chan (middle infield), Park Sung-gyu (outfield), Koo Ja-wook (outfield), Choi Hyoung-woo (designated hitter), Lewin Diaz (first base), Ryu Ji-hyeok (second base), Kang Min-ho (catcher), Kim Young-woong (third base), and Lee Jae-hyun (shortstop). Choi Won-tae started as the pitcher.
The KIA Tigers’ lineup included Park Jae-hyun (outfield), Park Sang-jun (designated hitter), Kim Do-young (third base), Harold Castro (first base), Na Sung-bum (outfield), Kim Sun-bin (second base), Ha Ju-seok (shortstop), Kim Tae-gun (catcher), and Kim Ho-ryeong (middle infield). The starting pitchers were Sira-ka and Kye-sho.
Kim Do-young eventually hit his 40th home run of the season. While he had a chance to set a new record just three days prior with four RBIs against the KT Wiz in Gwangju, a one-game delay meant he fell short of breaking Lee Seung-yeop’s record for the fastest 40 home runs. In the ninth inning, Kim Do-young reached base on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a two-run, two-base hit by Castro, adding to his team’s tally. He currently leads the league in runs scored, ahead of Austin (LG).
Pitching Performances and Scoring
Choi Won-tae pitched effectively through five innings, allowing four hits and two walks, limiting the KIA offense. His pitch count was efficient at 77 pitches through five innings. Miyagori Satoshi took over on the mound in the sixth inning and gave up Kim Do-young’s solo home run. However, subsequent pitchers Lee Seung-min (1.1 innings) and Jang Chan-hee (1 inning) held KIA scoreless, maintaining the team’s advantage.
In contrast, Sira-ka struggled, failing to complete five innings. Despite allowing only three hits, his control faltered, resulting in five walks and four earned runs on 90 pitches before being replaced in the fifth inning with two outs. In the seventh inning, KIA’s Hong Geon-hee gave up a walk to Kim Ji-chan and then allowed Park Sung-gyu a two-run, left-center field home run off a 141 km/h fastball, effectively sealing the victory for Samsung.
This hit marked Park Sung-gyu’s first career double-digit home run season, achieving the milestone in his eighth year since his debut in 2019. The early part of the game progressed quickly with the starting pitchers Choi Won-tae and Sira-ka. Samsung took the initial lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Park Sung-gyu reached base on a walk, Koo Ja-wook advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and Choi Hyoung-woo walked to load the bases. Diaz then hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Park Sung-gyu to score. With two outs, Ryu Ji-hyeok, who entered as a pinch runner for the injured Ryu Ji-hyeok, hit a two-run, RBI single, extending Samsung’s lead to 2-0.
KIA responded in the top of the fifth inning. Ha Ju-seok hit a sacrifice fly, and after Kim Tae-gun hit an RBI single off Samsung’s starter Choi Won-tae, they narrowed the deficit to 2-1. However, KIA failed to capitalize on further opportunities, ending the inning with stranded runners. Samsung extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Choi Hyoung-woo hit a two-run, RBI double with the bases loaded, making the score 4-1.
Late Innings and Final Score
In the sixth inning, Kim Do-young connected with a 149 km/h fastball from reliever Satoshi for a solo home run, cutting the lead to 4-2. This marked the home run he narrowly missed achieving two years prior when he hit 38 home runs and 40 doubles. Despite his individual achievement, it did not translate into a team victory.
Samsung responded in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kim Ji-chan walked, and then Park Sung-gyu hit a two-run, left-center field home run off Hong Geon-hee’s pitch, extending Samsung’s lead to 6-2 and effectively putting the game out of reach.
KIA mounted a final effort in the top of the ninth inning. Park Jae-hyun hit a solo home run off Samsung closer Kim Jae-yoon, and Kim Do-young followed with a single. Castro then hit a two-run, two-base hit, bringing KIA within two runs at 6-4. However, Na Sung-bum grounded out to end the game, and KIA could not complete the comeback.
