K-pop group LIGHTSUM has officially entered the Japanese music scene with the release of their debut album, ‘Re:idol’. The album, launched on the 23rd across various music platforms, signifies a new chapter for the six-member group, incorporating the popular Japanese concept of ‘kawaii’—meaning cute—into their musical identity.
‘Re:idol’ Explores Diverse Concepts and Sounds
The album title, ‘Re:idol’, reflects LIGHTSUM’s fresh start in Japan, embracing a cute and charming image. The title track, ‘どうして’ (Doshite), delves into the theme of unrequited love, portraying the feelings of someone infatuated with another’s words and actions. The song is characterized by its addictive melody and upbeat tempo, aiming to uplift listeners’ spirits.
Beyond the title track, ‘Re:idol’ features a total of five songs, showcasing LIGHTSUM’s multifaceted appeal. These include:
- ‘Fallin’ World’
- ‘Stop and Go’
- ‘夜を歩く君へ’ (Yoru o Aruku Kimi e)
- ‘POSE!’ (Original Digital Single)
- ‘POSE! (Kawaii ver.)’ – A cute rendition of their digital single.
The inclusion of the ‘Kawaii ver.’ of ‘POSE!’ specifically highlights the group’s adaptation to the Japanese market’s preferences, blending their existing music with a distinctly adorable aesthetic.
Members Share Excitement and Challenges of Japanese Debut
The members of LIGHTSUM expressed their enthusiasm and dedication in preparing for their Japanese debut. Sangah shared her joy and anticipation, stating, “We are happy to be able to present an album we worked hard to prepare, and we are filled with excitement for our Japanese debut. We believe it’s an album with truly wonderful songs, and we hope many people will listen to it and love it.”
Juhyun elaborated on the title track ‘Doshite’, describing it as a song that expresses the heart of a girl’s crush with LIGHTSUM’s unique cute lyrics and melody. “The melody is very addictive and exciting, making me feel good every time I listen to it. We hope you will listen carefully to the members’ vocals expressing various emotions,” she added.
The journey to embracing the ‘kawaii’ concept was not without its challenges. Chowon revealed in a documentary preceding the debut that initially, the concept felt daunting as they had never explored it before. “We were worried and found it difficult at first because we had never tried a ‘kawaii’ concept. We asked Hina, who is from Japan, a lot of questions and looked for related videos. We put a lot of effort into practicing our vocal style and gestures. Now, I feel like we can fully enjoy the concept,” Chowon explained.
Hina, as the sole Japanese member, played a crucial role in guiding her bandmates. She noted, “As the only Japanese member, I understand Japan’s ‘kawaii’ culture the best, so I recommended gestures that would suit the members and carefully guided their pronunciation, working together to enhance the overall quality.”
Upcoming Activities and Fan Engagement in Japan
Looking ahead, LIGHTSUM is set to engage with their Japanese fanbase through various activities. Their debut stage will be at the large-scale ‘SBI MUSIC CIRCUS HOKKAIDO 2026’ festival, held at the Hokkaido Daiwa House Premier Stage Dome on the 26th. Yujung expressed her nervousness and excitement about performing on such a grand stage for their debut, promising to showcase the group’s diverse charms.
Nayoung conveyed her desire for a busy year-end, emphasizing the significance of performing on stage after a long wait, especially with their comeback and Japanese debut. “It’s a precious opportunity just to be able to spend time with our fans, SSUm, who have been waiting for our comeback and Japanese debut, and to perform on the stage we’ve been anticipating,” she said.
To commemorate the album release, LIGHTSUM held a promotional campaign in Seoul’s Seongsu-dong on the day of the release, wearing outfits inspired by the title track ‘Doshite’. Following the Hokkaido festival, the group is scheduled to embark on a tour of major Japanese cities, including Tokyo and Osaka, starting from the 10th of the following month. This tour will provide opportunities for them to connect and communicate with their local fans.
The group’s debut in Japan marks a significant milestone, showcasing their ambition to expand their reach and connect with a broader international audience through their unique blend of music and performance.
