In a dramatic return to the field after a six-week absence due to a back injury, Samsung Lions infielder Lee Jae-hyun delivered a game-winning 130-meter solo home run. However, the jubilant celebration was tempered by a significant defensive miscue earlier in the game that he felt nearly cost his team the victory. The 23-year-old player, making his comeback as the number nine hitter and infielder, contributed significantly to the Lions’ 8-6 win against the Kiwoom Heroes at the Gocheok Sky Dome on the 21st, with his performance including two hits (one home run), one RBI, and one run scored.
A Decisive Hit Amidst Lingering Concerns
The pivotal moment came in the top of the eighth inning with the score tied 6-6. Lee Jae-hyun stepped up to the plate with one out and faced pitcher Park Jung-hoon. After a fierce battle that went to eight pitches, he connected with a 146 km/h fastball, sending it soaring over the center field wall for his ninth home run of the season. This blast ultimately secured the win for the Lions.
Despite the heroics at the plate, Lee Jae-hyun expressed more concern over a fielding error in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Samsung Lions had initially built a comfortable 6-0 lead, seemingly cruising towards an easy victory. However, in the fifth, with one out and runners on first and third, Lee Jae-hyun’s throw from first base was somewhat careless, failing to end the inning cleanly and allowing only one out. This lapse proved costly, as the very next batter, Matt Davidson, hit a two-run home run, shifting the momentum dramatically in favor of the Kiwoom Heroes and eventually leading to the Lions surrendering their lead and the game being tied at 6-6.
Reflecting on the Defensive Slip-Up
Speaking to reporters after the game, Lee Jae-hyun admitted, “It was a game that should have been comfortable, but because of that moment, the pitchers and the entire team had a really tough time.” He elaborated on his mindset during the crucial at-bat in the eighth inning: “From the batter’s box, I felt I had hit it well, but I wasn’t 100% sure it was a home run. So, I ran as hard as I could, thinking I had to make it safely to base before the outfield call came.” He added, with visible relief, “If I hadn’t hit a home run today, it would have truly been my fault for ruining the game. I’m just glad we won.”
The road back to the field for Lee Jae-hyun has been arduous. Throughout the early part of the season, he was plagued by persistent back pain. He was placed on the injured list twice and underwent a rehabilitation period of nearly six weeks after his last stint on the IL on the 13th of the previous month. Returning to the top-tier league, especially while his team is leading the league, brought immense pressure.
The Weight of Expectation and Physical Apprehension
Lee Jae-hyun described his mental state upon returning to the game: “When I went out onto the field today, my head felt a bit fuzzy, and my mind felt heavy. My body felt quite stiff from the start, even during fielding.” He confessed, “Having to come off the field injured twice, I was subconsciously worried about getting hurt again, even though I tried not to. The team has been doing so well, maintaining the league’s top position thanks to the other players. I felt a huge burden and was very nervous about potentially disrupting the team’s good momentum upon my return.”
Fortunately, his physical condition is now reported to be at 100%. Lee Jae-hyun expressed gratitude for the support he received during his recovery. “During my rehabilitation, the manager and coaching staff were very understanding, telling me not to rush and to recover fully. Thanks to them, my mind has cleared up, and the hospital also said I was fine,” he stated confidently. “I have no pain at all now, so I don’t need to worry about the injury anymore.”
Looking Ahead: A Commitment to Improvement
He recalled a moment after his game-winning home run: “When I came into the dugout, Kang Min-ho hyung told me, ‘Focus on fielding.’ Hearing that, I snapped back to attention and went back out to field.” This advice served as a crucial reminder to refocus on his defensive responsibilities.
Lee Jae-hyun concluded with a strong sense of self-reflection: “In my opinion, today’s game is one that requires deep introspection. It’s a performance I must not repeat. I’ve made a lot of fielding mistakes this season, which is unusual for me. Now that my body is feeling better, I will work diligently with Coach Ju on my fundamentals to reduce errors.” This commitment signals his determination to put the defensive lapse behind him and contribute more reliably to the team’s success.
